The taxi ride to your apartment was close to excruciating. How would you casually tell Mae that, Hey, I'm friends with Dan and Phil oh and yeah, Dan kissed me as I was coming back from a sleepover at their house!? As the thoughts rolled in your head, the panic became more and more noticeable, cutting a glance from the taxi driver.
"You alright ma'am?" He asks, with a very thick northern accent, "You look to be a bit green."
"No no, I'm fine, thanks." You lie through your teeth. As you slow to a stop outside your apartment, a wave of anxiety flows through you. You gulp down your fear as you pass your money to the driver, and wait for him to turn off the street before you start slapping yourself repetitively on the forehead.
"Stupid stupid stupid! I've f*cked everything up!" You shout whisper at yourself, now pacing in front of your apartment building. You finally start to calm down as the sun gets lower, turning from afternoon to evening.
"She is home!" Mae shouts as you close your creaky front door. You quickly slide off your boots/sneakers beforeMaecan attack you with one of her bear hugs. She quickly comes zooming into the hallway, slipping slightly on the wood floor due to her socks and proceeds to hug you with full force.
"You smell weird." She says shortly after the attack, sniffing your shirt creepily.
"You smell weird." You say back, a small smirk on your face.
"You smell like you actually dived into a pool of cologne. What are you trying to attract, other women?" She asks, retorting your small joke.
"This is why we are friends." You chuckle, walking into the kitchen, Mae following you closely behind. You loved how Mae never asked questions and just joked about it instead. She was like a sister, annoying at the best and worst times.
"Oh, so the cologne is meant for me? Well, sorry to break it to you, but I'm straight."
"Hey, why haven't you started on dinner yet? We definitely don't have enough money to get take out, even Nandos." You say, completely unregarding her last remark.
"Well, I've placed a reservation for us at Gastronhome, so you don't need to worry about me falling into your procrastinating ways." She says, leaning on the door frame.
"Oh my god Mae! That's so expensive! We will literally have to kill someone to-" You can't finish your sentence as Mae places her hand over your mouth. Mae just laughs as you protest, but walks you calmly into your bedroom. As she drops her hands from your mouth, you go to protest but something catches your eye. Laid out on your bed is a beautiful dress, obviously costing much more than any other item of clothing you owned.

"Where else do you think the money has been going?" She says with a smirk. You just gape at the dresses, unsure what to say.
"This is why I do the finances, Y/N."

You arrive at Gastronhome, wearing the blue/white dress Mae had gotten you.
This is the perfect time to tell her about Dan and Phil. You think to yourself, making sure you don't accidentally mumble the words out loud. You walk inside, arm linked with Mae's, Her face split by a large grin, your face still plastered with the remainders of nerves and guilt. You both take a seat, and a waiter almost immediately comes out to show you the menu.
"Hello ladies, What is the special occasion?" He asks, making you look over at Mae as she smoothly puts on a bright face.
"Just a little friend time together, that's all. Whats the Chef's menu?" She says coolly, almost like she had refined the sentence word for word before she even spoke them.
"For you two, it shall be a surprise! however any allergies?" He asks as you both shake your head. He quickly walks away, leaving just you and Mae. You decide not to tell her straight off the bat, and might do so after dessert, just in case she kicks you out before you get to try any food.
"I hope they don't poison us." You say abruptly, trying to keep up conversation. A moment passes, and you burst out with laughter.
"Y/N, I think you've reached your peak awkward with that statement! No one thought it could be done but alas, it has! A true feat!" She says, mocking your statement, making you laugh more. The waiter suddenly pops up holding a small dish next to him. He smoothly places it onto the table revealing a small piece of meat, diced and decorated to make it seem almost as fancy as the dress you were wearing.
" Enjoy." He says, once again swiftly moving back into the kitchen.
"Oh, I intend to." Mae says, a large grin on her face as she picks up her knife and fork.

The first bite of your dessert was also the last. Even though every delicacy you were served that night was finely chopped and seasoned with very little, each course added up in the end.
"I feel like a stuffed turkey. I shouldn't be eating, someone should be eating me." You say as you fight the urge to slump back into your chair.
"yeah." Mae says halfheartedly, already slumping back into her chair.
The whole night you had been trying to find the right words to say to Mae. In your head, every way of explaining the situation ended up with Mae flipping the table, turning into a seething witch that proceeded to whack you over the head with a broom.
"Mae-" You get cut off by Mae's large sigh.
"I'm sorry, Y/N." She says, catching you completely off guard.
"What?"
"I-I need to tell you something, something big." She says, looking down at her almost full plate of tiny proportions.
"Okay."
"My Dad is sick." She says, smiling sadly up at you. You feel your mouth open, wanting to give reassurance, wanting to know more.
"He's been sick for a month now, and my mum rang yesterday saying that-" She starts to choke up. Never once in your years of knowing her, have you seen Mae cry. Shes always been the tough cookie, telling you to overcome my fears. You feel tears threatening to spill down your face, but you try to hide them.
"She rang to say he's not getting better." She says slowly. You reach out and hold her hand not only for her, but for you, too.
"I'm so, so sorry, Mae. We both love him so much." You say, trying as hard as you can to reassure her.
"She wants me to move back up north, and I'm not sure what to do. I want to stay with you, but these few weeks could be the last time I get to see him." She says, her tears creating little black streaks down her face. You quickly pay the bill, and hold her as she walks slowly outside of the restaurant. You sit on the curb, and hug her tightly.
"Do what you feel best, don't do it for me, for you." You say smiling sadly at her. You don't want Mae to leave, but you don't want her to stay and never see her Dad again.
"What is it again? The condition."
"Leukaemia. Stage 4." She says, a hollow taint to her voice. The taxi finally arrives and picks you up, the driver not daring to ask why you were both crying. You look out the window, watching as the city whizzes by, the light of the buildings mixing and bending with the darkness of night. You think of Mae, her Dad, Dan.
Dan.
"Sh*t." You whisper, making sure Mae can't hear you.
