They Think They Are Better Than Us


My mother was born out of wedlock in the 1930s. A domestic servant was seduced by a policeman and my mother, her child was punished for it. She was cruelly treated, denied an education, her books thrown in the fire, made to feel worthless.

So when one day I said, "They think they are better than us." She said, "They are, aren't they?" And she meant it.

It was a surprise to everyone when I passed my eleven plus. I've done OK considering but I denied myself opportunities I should have taken. If only I'd known I was good enough
