josh slept in the motel next door to the depressing hospital in order to be there for her. her condition wasn't stable and he didn't want to have to drive all the way home. josh would like to say that he spent most of his time in the waiting room on his phone, texting and reading free online books, which is far from the truth. he spent most of his time creeping on patient 3009, who, josh came to understand, was named tyler. tyler robert joseph, patient number 3009, fourth time in the sad hospital in three months for several attempted suicide attempts using various different methods. most recently was two days before josh and his mom arrived, this time tyler attempted to drown himself. josh felt bad for him, it must be extremely hard to deal with feelings so severe that you try to kill yourself four times.
josh also learned that his past suicide attempt did not put him into a coma but the doctors preformed a medically induced one, and he's scheduled to be lifted sometime during the week. josh asked if it was a decision of the family, but alas, tyler has literally no family. no one to visit, no one to go home to. josh wanted to be that person for him. he spent most of his time sitting in patient 30-... tyler's room, watching his chest rise and drop until josh fell asleep either in his chair or half laying on the bed half sitting in his chair. the nurses let him.
"sir," the nurses would say, walking in with their clipboards or their needles. "we need you to go back to the waiting room."
josh would get up and leave, and when the nurses left the room they would look at josh with pity and motion him back into the room. he went back in every time.
josh had more than a little crush on tyler.
