23. One of them

Levy's P.O.V.

"You can choose between me and Freed Lev", Laxus said as soon as they joined the others. She groaned and took a step closer to Gajeel.

"What do you mean? I don't need another partner; I already have one."

"He is too close to you Levy. Now choose between me and Freed."

Gajeel remained silent, nothing revealed how he felt hearing these harsh words once again. Levy only felt his grip on her legs tightened, his only response to Laxus' words. She squeezed his shoulder in response, showing him she didn't want to give in the demands of her brother.

"Laxus, Gajeel is my partner and I don't want to change that. Besides, you both have partners too!", she exclaimed and looked at Mira and Juvia, who had become Freed's partner after Gray passed her over to him without saying another word.

"Laxus, Levy is right. She chose Gajeel to be her partner, everything's fine. It's just a game anyways Laxus, let it be like it is right now". After Mira tried to calm him down, Laxus turned to her and let his anger out on her.

"Be quiet Mira, you aren't involved in this! Only because you want everyone to be stupidly happy, you don't have the right to intervene!" Laxus shouted at her and suddenly, it grew dead silent. Natsu, Gray and Elfman stopped to fight immediately. Everyone listened to what Mira had to say next. Levy knew about Mira's personality. She was the kindest hearted person she knew, but if she wanted, she could be a demon. Laxus didn't seem to realise his mistake until she replied to him.

"Go on Laxus, yell at them, tell your sister to stop talking to Gajeel! She survived without us, all this time and now you are so cruel to forbid her any kind of relationship with him, the man who made sure she's still alive! You should go on your knees ad thank him, because if it wasn't for him, Levy would be dead! I can't stand you like that anymore because you know, I want everyone to be 'stupidly happy'! I'm out". With these words, she walked out of the water and disappeared into the forest. Everyone was still quiet. When Laxus turned around to Levy, opening his mouth to say something, she grabbed his arm and dragged him further away from the others. Gladly, she could hear their arguing and laugh a few seconds later.

As soon as she stepped out of the water onto the beach, Laxus began again as if he had already forgotten about Mira.

"Levy, no matter what Mira said, I still don't want you to be next to him an-".

"Laxus, just stop talking for once and let me say something!" Her voice was raised slightly, not wanting to gain the attention of the others once more. She inhaled deeply, calming her thoughts before telling her brother how she felt.

"I was left alone for years. I was alone, had no money, no place to stay, nothing to eat. All I had was me, nothing more. My brother was gone, my best friend, my home. Though I had literally nothing I survived. And when I couldn't survive alone, Gajeel stepped into my life and saved me.
I don't care what the secret is you have against him, Gajeel will tell me one day. You have no right to tell me what's best for me! There is no reason for me to mistrust the man who saved my life twice.
Do you want to know more? Gajeel told me he had seen me before. You are a half dragon like him and I know about the keen scent you all possess. Didn't you smell me once? You must have passed him, you must have smelled something odd! Just tell me, did you have a clue he knew where I was?"

She waited for a few moments, studying her brother's face exactly. When he adverted her eyes from hers, she had her answer, the bitter truth. On the verge of tears, she offered him a smile and took a step away from him.

"I need time Laxus. It's hard to know you are the only one to search for her sibling.
I would look after Mira. She seemed to be really sad." As Mira did before, she went away from Laxus towards the water, meeting the curious looks from a few of her mates, a questioning one from Gajeel. As soon as she reached him, she smiled. Sitting on his shoulders one moment later, she saw Laxus disappearing in the forest as well.
