"Let's divide into two teams" he solemnly spoke.
"Your challenge, your rules. Tell me more, Nishinoya Yuu" I teased, causing Salty Nosyshima to smile at me again. I looked away from the blonde guy. The reason why I felt so uneasy when Tsukishima was around was that his sarcasm was the kind of more piercing than mine.
Nishinoya paid me no attention and said: "The two teams will have three players. Ryu and Sugawara," and he pointed at my best friend and a gentle-looking silver-haired guy "you two are coming with me while Kageyama and Tsukishima will go with Teaser Senpai".
The scary, raven-haired guy fixed me with his piercing blue eyes while I gave my teammates five but I didn't dare to look at Tsukishima in his face.
"AWWW COME OOOOON THAT'S NOT FAIR! I WANNA PLAY! I WANNA SPIKE AND JUMP, TOO!" a whimsical voice which belonged to the rather noisy Shrimpie with orange hair - I'll call him Carrot Guy from now on - took the strange feeling caused by Tsukishima away from my mind.
"HINATA, BOKE!" this growl came from the scary setter, who then glanced at Tsukishima with a handful of pure despise, causing my skin to chill and get goosebumps.
Tch. Fire Guy's got some brains in there after all. He gave me the worst teammates I could get... it won't be easy to get on well with them.
"Ok, let's start!"
Carrot Guy and a cute, shy boy with freckles were standing next to a small blackboard."Salty Senpai" and "Guardian Deity" were the names Nishinoya gave to our teams.
Kageyama prepared to serve. I had never seen such a powerful smash. Ace.
The first point was ours. Kageyama's following serve went out. Carrot Guy got a ball on his nose for laughing at him.
Tsukishima adjusted his glasses and said "tch".
Even though I made nice receives, my team ended up losing the first set for 25-20 because Kageyama, who really was an incredibly skilled setter and knew well how to behave on the court, gave instructions and signals that Tsukishima refused to follow.
Sugawara surely wasn't as talented as Kageyama but I swear I'd have given all the gold on this planet to have him on my team instead of the bad-tempered first year.
Watching Nishinoya receive perfectly all Tsukishima spikes and even blocks was incredible. His concentration was astounding and, if outside the court he was just like fire, on the court he seemed to transform into another person. The quiet version of Nishinoya. As fast as the wind. His plays were incredibly quiet and I couldn't help but be surprised by them though I had seen his performance previously on that same afternoon. He showed a talent you could never imagine he had.
However, we won the second set though we had to fight hard for it. The score was 28-26.
But almost at the half of the third set I received one of the best spikes Ryu had ever hit and I felt a sharp pain in my ankle.
Kuso... not again... not NOW!
I fell to the ground but, while Tsukishima tried to help me out while asking me if I was okay - behaviour which caused astonishment to spread across the gym - I immediately got up without his help and told them all I was okay.
The pain in my ankle obviously had an impact on my performance and my receives eventually got less effective. We shamefully lost the set for 25-16 and the challenge, too.
I rushed into the locker room and only then the tears I was trying to hold back started rolling down and I buried my face in my hands to lower the noise caused by my sobs which eventually started to escape my throat against my will.
You can't see me, but at least try to imagine how I felt.
My worst fear had come to reality AGAIN. My tears were of anger for not being able to play at my best and of fear of not being able to play again.
