I was reaching for her. Frantically grabbing at her hand, but it kept slipping through my fingers.
"No! Please! Don't leave me. Not like this! "
Tears ran down my face as frustration gripped me. She lifted her head up, smiling. A single tear fell from her ever smiling eye.
"I'll see you again, sweety. Scouts Honor. " She whispered.
Before I could protest, she vanished into the darkness. The walls started closing in on me, I was alone. I panicked, holding my hands out to try and stop it. But it was too late, the shadows swallowed me whole.
...I bolted up fast, sweat trickled down the side of my face as I struggled to put air in my lungs. My face , wet and warm from my tears. The only thing visible was the first sign of daylight peeking into my window. I stared at it and focused all my energy into breathing.
That's it, Cam. In and out. In and out. I gasped.
My heart relaxed after a few breaths. I looked around my simply decorated dorm, back to reality. Where she no longer existed. More tears made their way down my face as I gripped my blanket tight, leaning against the headboard.
The endless thoughts of her smile, her jokes, the great advice she'd give me all came rushing into my head. But above all, I heard her laugh ringing in my ears. My hand flew to my mouth to muffle the sob that threatened to come out.
Suddenly, there was a knock on my door.
I swiped my face, clearing my throat.
"Hmmmm? "Val slowly poked her head in, but avoided eye contact as always.
"Sorry to interrupt hunn, but Fred asked if you could come downstairs for a little team meeting?" She hesitated.
Silence.
"It'll be really quick, I promise!" She added, still lingering at my door.
I stayed quiet again. Not sure what to say to the sudden invitation.
"Uhhh.... If you're not feeling well I-"
"It's fine. I'll be there in a sec." I managed to croak.
"Okay! I'll let him know right now!" A gentle click of my door and then her footsteps rushed down the spiral staircase.
I took the moment of silence to calm down a bit and assemble my thoughts.
Start by getting ready Cam.
Right. I slid out of bed and made my way to the restroom. I didn't need the mirror to know what I looked like. I felt it. Baggy, dark-circled eyes, white chapped lips, and hair that looked like I wrestled a bear. My skin care team would freak out if they saw the state I was in.
But I shrugged anyways, going through the daily necessities. Wash the face, brush the teeth, and scrape the wild untamed hair into a somewhat neat bun. I looked down to my worn out PJs and shrugged again.
Not like I'm going anywhere anyways.
And with that, I opened the door to enter the unfair world that hated me so much.
