Angelica's POV
We passed through a gate and the twins and I were amazed by the vast vineyards on either side of us. I could see a few workers here and there busy with whatever they were doing. I didn't realize Luc was also into winemaking. Far ahead was a villa that looked like it had been there for centuries. There were vines growing on the left side and over one balcony.
When we got to the main entrance of the villa, there was an elderly couple and another man who somehow resembled Luc holding down three children of varying ages. When we got around to getting out of the car, the elderly couple immediately greeted us while the other man led his children towards us. "Angel, meet Vicenzo and Lucia Ferrazi, my mother's parents. And Vittorio Ferrazi, my mother's brother." This man was his uncle? They looked more like cousins. He didn't seem to be that much older than Luc. My disbelief was probably obvious since all of them looked amused by my expression. "My mother had me when she was not yet twenty and Vitto here was born a few years earlier," he added by way of explanation and I just nodded. The twins were looking at them strangely, probably because they haven't been around this much tanned skin. "Lucas, Alyssa, meet your Nonno and Nonna. They are daddy's grandparents. And this man here is your Zio Vitto." The twins looked up to them Mr. and Mrs. Ferazzi hugged them both, almost to the point of getting emotional.
"Lucas is the image of you, caro," Lucia said, teary eyed. "He has the look of our Luciana and your father. And Alyssa is the image of Luciana." As much as I wanted to object, saying they got something from my side of the family too, I just can't, seeing as they barely got anything from me. No one would question their paternity. The three kids looked at the twins, they looked older than the twins actually. "Lucas, Alyssa, these are your cousins, Marciana," Lucia said, gesturing towards the tallest and most likely eldest. "Then there is Victoria," looking towards the middle child. "And Rocco," the youngest and only boy of the family. He seemed to be only a few years older than Lucas.
Lucia made her way towards me and put a hand in my cheek, "Grazie," she said. I don't know what she was thanking me for but I just smiled at her. It was then that Rocco grabbed Lucas' hand. "Do you know how to ride a horse?" he asked my son in heavily accented English.
My son nodded shyly. "Yes, but," he demurred but it seems Rocco has the temperament of his cousin Luc. "Luc, I don't think horseback riding is such a good idea. It has been awhile since Lucas has ridden a horse. And it was only under strict instructions from my brother's trainer." My stepbrother was into horse racing and he had a few racehorses but he had a few ponies for his kids and the twins.
"Do not worry Signorina. I will take them to the stables and I will have one of the men watch them," Vitto suggested. "They will come to no harm here."
"Don't worry Angel. They will only mount ponies, not the thoroughbreds," Luc added and when I looked down to my son, he was looking at me with a hopeful expression.
"Be careful okay," I told him. "Do as Zio Vitto tell you," I added. He nodded happily and let himself be dragged by Rocco.
Vicenzo and Luc excused themselves to talk about business and Lucia led me to the kitchen to introduce me to Marietta, Vitto's wife. Marciana and Victoria led my daughter to their bedroom and I didn't bother asking what they were going to do.
As we walked along the villa, I saw various pictures of Luc's maternal family. I also saw a life sized portrait of his mother who was, in all honesty, a stunning beauty. And from what I could remember of his father, who I only also saw in a portrait, he had a rugged beauty. No wonder Luc and Alessandra were both devastatingly gorgeous.
When we entered the kitchen, I was immediately drawn to the aroma of whatever the women were cooking. Probably pasta, we are in Italy after all.
The women were chatting among themselves and paused when Lucia and I entered. One woman who was kneading some dough washed her hands off of the flour in her hands. "Ciao, I am Marietta, Vittorio's wife. I am so pleased to finally meet you," she said in stilted English. I shook her hand a little shyly, stunned at her beauty. My God, is there anyone in Luc's family who isn't a beauty?
"Give her a tour of the house Marietta, and the gardens. I will finish off here," Lucia said. Marietta led me outside the kitchen and gave me a tour of the modestly decorated villa.
"Let us go outside to the garden. It is much better there," she said. We went through one of the side doors of the villa and what I saw was nothing short of paradise. The plants were well tended to I noticed as she introduced me to the various plants. "I am glad it is you Lucca is marrying, you know," she said all of a sudden, going off the topic of gardening and landscaping.
I didn't hide my surprise at her statement. "I just hope he won't regret it," I said more to myself than to her.
"As long as he is not marrying that Maria Allegri, I am sure he won't regret it," she said viciously. I wonder what brought that on.
"I had the impression that they are were more than friends but why does it seem that everyone doesn't want her for him?" I asked, not bothering to hide my curiosity,
Marietta bit her lip but gave in to the temptation to gossip. "I just do not like her. She is not a good person. Her mother was a puttana. His father cheated on his wife with his mother but she is his only child so Signora Allegri had no choice but to accept her. Signora Allegri left her house to avoid humiliation. Signor Allegri made his puttana and bastardo live in his house. Maria is spoilt and growing up to be like her mother. Lucca only tolerates Signor Allegri's decisions because he was a dear friend to his other Nonno. Maria tries to attach herself to Lucca but it is a good think he is not tricked into marrying her. That is why we were all happy when he said he was marrying his secretary who is a famous model."
After that impassioned speech, Marietta went back to talking about plants which greatly relieved me. But I keep wondering for how long will Lucca be able to resist the charms of the temptress bitch who is Maria Allegri. She was raised by a whore after all.
Author's Note:
Guys, I have no idea if what I'm putting in this story is geographically accurate since I think I mentioned them being based in Milan. I don't even know if there are vineyards near Milan. What I had in mind was the vineyard in Verona, if it was really Verona in the movie "Letters to Juliet." And I think I used either Tuscany or Sicily in the Prologue. So yeah, I don't even know what places I mention here. Forgive me, I just put what comes to mind. And I'm too lazy to do research.
PS:
My laptop turned off no less than five times while I finished typing and posting this chapter. Do you guys see my problem now?
