Angelica's POV
Lucca and I entered the grand ballroom of the mansion, or was it a place, and there was immediately a sudden, dramatic silence. Was that Lucca's effect? Really? Everyone's eyes were on us? The murmurs and whispers started when we descended down the stairs. I wanted to look down because I if were to be honest, I was really intimidated.
Luc looked like this was something normal for him and I can't blame him. Titles may be useless these days but society was still in awe of someone who holds it. And I was a nobody. Even worse, I was his employee. I could already think what the people here were thinking. All they probably see is a woman who was clever enough to have trapped him by getting pregnant.
Luc and I walk towards two couple who were in their sixties. The women looked friendly enough, though wary. "Everyone, I would like to you to meet my fiancé, Angelica Sanchez," he introduced. He turned to me and his eyes warned me to be nice. "Darling, this is Signor Tomas Riccardi. He was a friend to my late father and owns one of the most successful banks in Europe and his wife Signora Elena Riccardi. And this is Lord Charles Hamilton, and his wife Catherine."
I smiled at them and accepted the hand they offered. "You look so familiar my dear," Lady Catherine said. She had an evident British accent.
"She once graced the covers of magazines all over Europe, madam," Luc answered politely. I'm not sure if he's embarrassed or not. And I am past caring. He chose to be with me despite my background and despite my protests. He is supposed to be with a titled woman or an heiress but unfortunately for him, he's with an ex-model.
The diamonds glinting at Signora Riccardi's face was as bright as her smile. "I remember now. You once walked the final show for some of Italy's greatest designers." I couldn't help but smile that she remembers me. My career was short lived but I did make an impression to some people.
"Grazie Signora," I thanked her. "It is an honor to be recognized by you."
Luc proceeded to talk business with Signor Riccardi and Lord Charles when I heard an annoyingly familiar voice. "Luc, it is nice to see you here." Maria's voice was like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. It grated on my nerves. "I am surprised to see you, however. After the scandal with this woman erupted, I would have thought you wouldn't go to social events for a while."
All of us immediately turned to Luc at where Maria was standing. Luc was simmering with suppressed rage. The two elderly women we were with blanched, perhaps not really liking Maria Allegri. She wasn't a likeable person anyway. I completely sympathize with them. I wonder if she tried to seduce their husbands as well.
"You will remember to refer to my fiancé with respect Maria. Or I will wash my hands off of you completely," Luc said in a barely controlled temper. The man Maria with was looking very awkward where he was. He looked to be a man easily manipulated by a woman like Maria.
The sick Maria whose nurse kept calling Luc didn't seem to have existed. The woman in front of us in the indecently revealing red dress was a woman with a purpose. Probably the purpose was to ruin me. Or those calls were just her being the overly dramatic to get Luc's attention.
There was an evil glint in Maria's eyes. "You know you can't really do that Luc. You have to wait til I am married to get read of me. That was a clause in your grandfather's will. Dear papa was such a good friend to your nonno, he was kind enough to take care of me as well."
So that's why he seems to have guardianship of this venomous bitch. Luc laughed without humor or amusement. "Is that the hold you think you have over my brother?" our eyes immediately went to the direction of the voice. Alessandra was regally dressed in blue, hanging in the arm of Antonio Barone. "Do consult your lawyer regarding the terms and clauses of my nonno's will and yours Maria. You might be surprised how much you've abused the power you think you have over my brother. Now go. You know I don't mind being the center of attention and I have little regard with what people think."
The loathing was very obvious in Maria but she still had the audacity to huff and walk out haughtily, dragging the man with her. I small crowd of people were surrounding us, pretending not to listen to what happened and they also dispersed when Maria walk out.
I smile gratefully to Alessandra. I may not care about what people think but whatever I do will reflect badly on my children and they've had too much unwanted attention already. I mouthed a "thank you" to her while she came near us, not letting go of Antonio's arm. "You really do have to disillusion her some time brother," she told an aghast Luc. "She really has become a past now." She then turned her attention to Lord Charles and Signor Riccardi and their wives who seemed to be in awe of her.
With that, everyone's attention drifted away from us while our men continued talking business and us women talked about everything else.
Author's note:
So I know it's obvious this was planned or even thought out. I know it took me too long to make this chapter but I have to be honest, I honestly don't know where this story is headed. I don't know what to write next that's why it's taking me so damn long to update. Sorry guys.
