Angelica's POV
We were all lounging by the pool when Luc's phone started to ring incessantly. He ignored it the first three consecutive times but gave up exasperatedly on the fourth time. He was muttering tersely on his phone in Italian, most which I didn't understand coz he was talking so lowly.
"Madre Dio," he exclaimed. "I am sick and tired of her behavior. This is the last time this is the last time I will come to her just because she overdosed." Her? Overdosed? Oh God! Please, don't let it be Maria Allegri.
His knuckles whitened due to the strain. He stood up suddenly, making everyone look up to him. "Forgive me Nonno, Nonna, but we must leave immediately. Something important came up," he explained vaguely. But we all had an idea what exactly was happening. Is this what is going to happen throughout our marriage. For him to drop everything and everyone because Maria Allegri suddenly needs him by her side?
The ride back to the city was quiet. The twins were asleep, probably due to being tired from playing with their cousins. I decided to keep my mouth shut. I wasn't in the mood to talk to him. Not even to ask what the hell was happening. It was pretty damned obvious. Even though he tried to show he didn't care very much, I know what happened was eating up at his conscience.
When we arrived at the mansion, I immediately got out of his car and woke up the kids. He ushered them inside without even a glance at me. "I'm sorry. But I have to see Maria. She needs me," he said awkwardly.
"What exactly happened Lucca?" I demanded, using his entire first name. I was no pushover. I am not going to stand by and watch him be with his mistress. I am at the point of not caring if this was a life and death situation. I don't care if her life was hanging by a thin thread. I will not have him choose her over me for a second time. I'd rather face my parents' disapproval.
"Maria suffers from being bipolar. She has regular maintenance medication. She overdosed on sleeping pills again. But I'm afraid it's not only sleeping pills she took. She needs me," he said finally. The last statement was what woke me up to reality,
"Tell me honestly Lucca, is this what is going to happen throughout our marriage? You running to her every time something like this happens? She is not your responsibility. Maybe you should reconsider marriage," I said, looking him straight in the eyes. If I come out of this situation being labeled the bad guy, the antagonist, I don't give a damn.
He sighed deeply. "Have some compassion Angelica. Maria is a sick woman. She has no one to take care of her. Her family is gone. She only has me left." He looked so convincing. Does he honestly not know that woman's real feelings towards him or is he being blind by choice.
"Has she no distant relatives or friends? This is the second time something like this happened. I was a coward and I was weak back then Luc. But not anymore. I know what she is to you. I am not entirely stupid. I have the twins to consider now. Their happiness is paramount in all my decisions. I can accept being second priority in your life. But I will not let my children come second when it comes to you. Either you put them first, over your mistress, or you will have to take me to court to see them."
"Dio! You are overreacting about this woman! Her doctor called me because she asked for me. No one is making me choose between her and the twins, only you. Will you begrudge her that simple favor?"
"Whatever. Go to her Lucca. See if I care. Piece of advice, you should really reconsider marriage to me if this continues to happen."
I went inside without a backward glance. It was almost dark. I heard him get inside his car a drive away as I held back tears. What happened on our last day together years ago is still burned in my mind. How he went to her. How he chose her over me. How he denied me to her.
Flashback
It was the most beautiful week of her life. Angelica woke to a beautiful sunshine. She turned around on the bed and felt the coldness where Luc's body should be. She heard a door open and pretended to still be asleep. Luc always wakes her up with kisses that proceeded to awesome sex.
She waited for his lips but realized that maybe it wasn't coming. She could hear him talking to someone on the phone. "Yes Maria, I will be there right away..." he said in a soothing tone. "I know, I'm sorry. I had some business to take care of here... Don't worry, I am not having an affair. You are still the most important woman to me. I know. Bye."
She continued to pretend to be asleep. She could almost feel her heart literally breaking into pieces. She felt him standing on the side of the bed and then seated himself next to her. The moment she felt his lips on the side of her head, she almost let the tears she's been holding back fall. "Arrivederci mio amore."
He stood up from the bed and the last thing she heard was the door closing and her heart breaking. How in hell had she became involved with a man who was already in a relationship?
When she heard the door close carefully, she immediately got up and took a shower, letting the water wash away her tears. How could she be so stupid? Giving a man like him her virginity. She knew better than fall for someone like him.
It was time to leave. After her shower, she went through the connecting doors to her room. She packed her bags clumsily, flinging anything and everything in her suitcases.
She rang for a maid to help her bring her suitcases down. "Signorina, are you not going to wait for the Signor? He was only going to the neighboring estate." He could've gone to hell for all I care.
"No, he already knows I am going today," I lied through gritted teeth. "Can someone take me to the airport?" I asked tersely.
The maid nodded and called for one of the estate drivers, instructing him to ready the car.
Goodbye Lucca. It was great while it lasted. Too bad it couldn't last forever.
