Starting Over

The shadow of the ruins looms above, filling you with determination. The familiar chime ringed out echoing in your ears. It felt as if someone was playing with your hair or running their fingers along your back. That feeling wasn't just there, it was everywhere. Your mind felt calm and peaceful.

It was nothing like what you had previously felt.

Back at 'Librarby', the moment you had stepped in you were tackled to the ground, the monster's claws dug deep into your throat. At that moment you were starting to regret everything. You tried calling out for Sans in hope that maybe he would care enough to help you, but nobody came. The other monsters were shouting around you. You weren't sure if they were excited or angry.

Then black spots ate up your vision. After what felt like forever, yet also just moments, you existed again. Your soul kept the determination to continue what your life was before. Back when everyone was okay. Life when everything was new and confusing, but still okay.

Reset to your last save point? A similar voice asked.

There was no need to respond. It was like your choice was made for you. Everything faded again and you ended up back here. All the memories came back almost at once. That moment of peace gone.

Pain shot through your throat for a moment as you remembered the long sharp claws digging into you. Bennett ran over and lifted you up off the ground. Your face was warm, making your tears feel cool as they slid down.

"B-Bennett!" You cried after you stopped coughing. "I thought I'd never see you again!"

He said nothing and just cuddled you close to him. His breathing was uneven as he held you, then it hitched. You weren't sure if you've ever really seen him cry. Looking up at him, you moved his hair back and wrapped your arms around his neck in a hug.

Together, you sat like that for the longest time. Nothing else mattered. At one point you brought Flowey between you two. He wasn't just a normal sunflower anymore. It's really him. You finally stopped crying and let out a shaky sigh. Your mouth curling into a fragile smile. You aren't alone anymore.

"So what exactly happened? I usually know a lot more when there's a reset, but... I-I don't know..." Flowey finally asked what would've never been spoken of otherwise.

"Yeah... How did we end up back here?" Bennett whispered. His voice seemed surprisingly calm, considering all the crying he's done.

"You guys were gone. I was alone and I didn't know what to do... I'm so sorry! It shouldn't have happened like this!" Tears pooled in your eyes again.

Flowey's eyes widened as he began to realize what had happened. He's never died before without the option to return, let alone not even knowing he was gone. "I-it's n-not your f-fault, (Y/N). No one has ever gotten it right their first time." It felt he was trying to comfort himself more.

"Toriel..." Bennett whispered to himself.

"What? What about her?" The goat woman. The thought had slipped by so easily, you forgot you'd have to live with her again.

"She can change," His face seemed to brighten a bit. We all still has all their memories. Will everyone else? "I knew I wouldn't have another chance to escape the way you did, (Y/N), so I tried something else. I went along with what she wanted. A child. After a while she started to trust me more and she told me about all the other children that fell."

He turned his gaze to Flowey. "And you too," Flowey seemed a little worried about it. What was it he was hiding? "Can I tell (Y/N) everything?" He asked.

"W-well I... I guess." He finally agreed.

"Flowey, he's her son." You furrowed an eyebrow in confusion. He's her son? But he's a flower? "He actually used to be a goat too." Oh. "He... has a long story. I'm sure he can tell you sometime if he'd like to." Flowey looked away, a little uncomfortable, thinking about telling his story. "Um... well she had Asriel," He jerked his head towards the flower. "And one day a human child fell. Their name was Chara. The family took them in as their own, unable to return them to the surface."

"Can we not go back?" Your voice cracked at the end.

"I don't know..." He replied. "But... Uh... They were happy together. Until one day Chara got sick. They had only one request. To visit the golden flowers from their village. But there was nothing they could do. When they passed away Asriel was able to absorb their soul and turned into a strong monster. He could pass the barrier that holds everyone here. He carried Chara to the village and laid them on a bed of golden flowers in the middle of the place.

"The humans thought that he had killed them. The humans attacked him with all they had. But he didn't fight back. He died. Well there's a lot more to his story to why he's here but like I said, he can tell you. But as the king, Toriel's husband, saw it both of his children were dead. He lost them both in the same night. The next day he gave a speech to the kingdom. He said, in this world it kill or be killed. Everyone became crazy! She didn't agree with it and left him. Children kept falling here and leaving Toriel. They would all die. After 5 it just became sport. Toriel eventually fell victim to everything.

"(Y/N) I think we can fix everything! If we try hard enough we could change her for the better." He concluded his explanation.

"There's... uh... more than just her though. When I left it was so cold. I don't know how it was possible, but there was snow everywhere. There's a town out there. Do you think we could change them too?"

Bennett looked surprised. "I'm not sure. Maybe, but I don't know any of them."

You sighed and looked at Flowey. He just lifted some leaves on his stem in a shrugging motion. If Toriel can change, then maybe the others can too. Sans... he would probably act different with a little extra love. Papyrus, too, could act different if maybe you can convince him that what he's doing is wrong. The only others that you know are out there are the librarians. You don't know them well enough though to know how to change them.

"We should probably get going then and start over. It's worth a shot I think. If she remembers us though then I hope she isn't mad at me." You got up and dusted yourself off. Now you were back in that torn salmon dress. You scowled at it.

"Oh, she won't remember anything. No one does. Only those who have the power... to... rest..." He covered his mouth with a leaf from his stem and faced away.

"So only we remember..." Bennett said as he looked at you. "Wait, I can reset?" He looked at Flowey. "...You can reset?"

"I used to be able to. And, well, I guess you could but only if you save, but I wouldn't right now."

Bennett nodded in response and picked up the purse the flower was in. "Do you mind if I carry you this time?"

Flowey shrugged again. "I don't care. Just please keep me hidden from Toriel until she's normal."

You guys started to walk through the ruins once again. This time though you knew what you were doing.
