Reaping:

A tear rolls down my cheek as I cry in the corner. Today is the reaping. My family doesn't know this, but I am going to volunteer. I know, it seems like a death wish, but I have to. My family is nearly starving to death, and I need to help. If I win, we will be full everyday for the rest of our lives, but if I die, they will have one less mouth to feed. I am already in my reaping clothes. Lucelia, my sister, Reville, my brother, and Mom are still getting dress. I left a little bit of food for them in a niche in the wall. I hope it will last them long, but its not much.

I stand up and wipe a tear away. I have to look strong for my family, even though there is great sorrow in my heart. I've never cried in front of my family before, and I would like to keep it that way. I didn't even cry when I was whipped half to death after attacking a peacekeeper when a man was executed for speaking of a rebellion. I wished we could have one, even though there would be a lot of loss. I just want all this suffering to stop.

Lucelia comes down the stairs in a purple dress with a white lace neckline, matching mine, except mine is light green. She is 13, so this is her second reaping. She comes and hugs my waist.

"I won't get reaped, will I?" She asks with hopeful eyes. It didn't matter if she was or not. I was going to volunteer anyway.

"You won't, I promise," I say and stroke her golden hair.

"Are you sure?" she asks, a bit of fear trickling into her expression.

"Completely sure," I say and kiss her.

Just then, Reville, age 7, comes bursting into the room and hugs us.

"Is this a hugging contest?" He asks, his crystal blue eyes shining.

"Yes!" I lie and hug them both really tight. Reville doesn't understand the Games yet, so we keep it a secret till his 8 birthday, if I am even here for it. Mom is leaned up against the doorway with a smile on her face. Typical. Even through the toughest times she was making the best of it. Sometimes I wonder if she cries as well, keeping herself hidden from the family in hard times too. She gives me an assuring hug and kisses my forehead.

"I love you," she says.

"I love you to," I say back and smile, hoping that she didn't notice my puffy eyes.

"We better go."

Universe Starlette, our District Escort walks onto the stage in her usual bright Capitol attire. I almost laugh. Don't they realize how ugly they look in it?

I am standing next to Lucelia, holding her tightly. She shed a few tears, but after some reassuring words, she is okay.

"District 11, welcome to the annual Hunger Games reaping. Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor. Now, we shall now pick the tributes!" she says excitedly and waltzes over to the reaping bowl and picks a name. She uses her gloved hand to open the fine piece of paper and reads the name aloud.

"Lucelia Windsnapp!"

Thank goodness I was already planning on volunteering. Although, my stomach did turn at the sound of her name. She looks at me with fearful eyes.

"Ember! You promised!" She says and starts to cry.

"And I will stay true to my promise. I'm sorry," I say and look up at Universe with a confident look,"I volunteer as tribute!"

Gasps and nos ripple through the crowd as I walk up to the stage after prying off Lucelia.

"And what is your name dear?"

"Ember Windsnapp."

"Ah, a sister, eh?"

"Yes."

"Well, I guess we wouldn't want her stealing all the fame, would we?"

"I just want to keep my family alive."

Universe ignores my response and moves onto the boys. I don't catch his name. I look once more at my District. The mockingjays sing song to me, almost trying to make me feel better. I take a look at Lucelia and mouth;

'I love you.'

Then I whistle a song for the mockingjays to copy and sing for themselves.
