Dan:
He holds me in his warm arms and I instantly feel better. At least I tell myself I do, but the tears streaming down my face say otherwise. I miss my dad, I miss him so much. I miss who my mom used to be. I was young when my dad died but I still remember him and I remember who my mom was. I know this i'sent her. This person who drinks all the time and has no respect for herself; it just i'sent her. It's just a broken woman who can't fix herself and doesn't know how to ask others to help her.
"I don't know what I would do without you." I whisper in between sobs to Phil as he hugs me tighter.
"Take in three deep breaths, okay?" I do as I am told and am able to catch my breath. Soon my eyes are dry, my cheeks are wet, and my breath has steadied.
"You ready?"
I pull away and nod as he wipes my cheeks with his thumbs. I smile as he hands me my shirt and pulls his over his chiseled chest. He stands up, red blanket in hand, and holds his hand out to me. We make our way over to the van in the cool night. Once we are both settled in our seats and strapped in Phil pulls away from the hill and starts home. After a few silent moments I turn up the radio a bit to be greeted with some Fall out Boy. I giggle as the goofiest smile spreads across Phil's face and he begins to sing along. We stop at a red light and Phil leans back into his chair and gazes at me.
"Hi." I quietly say.
"Hey. Wanna talk?"
"Can we when we get...home?" I quietly say the last word and Phil smiles at me brightly when I do.
"Of course we can Dan."
He grabs my hand and squeezes it lightly as he says so.

Once we get home Phil leads me to the huge living where his parents are sitting down on the couch with Emma. They seem to be watching a princess movie with a lot of sparkles and high pitched singing. Once they see us they shoot up from the couch and hug us tightly one at a time. I don't know what to do at first but then embrace them each time.
"Phil we need to speak with you in the kitchen, Dan you can sit down on the couch honey." Phil's mother sweetly says to me and then gives Phil a bit of a death stare.
"Okay." I say quietly as I sit next to Emma, who is still entranced in the movie. Phil shoots me a wink before he is escorted through the swinging door into the kitchen. Emma and I sit in silence as I try to listen for what Phil's parents are saying.
"Hi Dan." I swing my head to the side to see Emma. To be fully honest I forgot she was here.
"Hello Emma. How are you?"
"I'm good, thank you for asking. How are you?"
"I'm okay, thanks"
The room is silent except for the soft hum of the T.V and the constant beats of my foot; tapping on the wooden floor.
"Your mom is in the guest bedroom."
"What?"
"Your mom, I can tell you are nervous. Do you want me to take you to her?" She stands up and holds a hand out to me. I'm astonished by her matureness right now; all I wanted to do was go cry in a corner for eternity.
"Sure." I say grabbing her hand, but she immediately gasps.
"What? What's wrong?" I ask nervously trying to pull my hand away in fright, but she has a death grip on it.
"He did it!"
"What?"
"Phil! He gave you the ring!"
"Oh yes," I let a blush and a smile spread across my face.
"He had talked to me about it for a while, and kept re-writing scripts to say to you. At one point he was going to serenade you with a song on his guitar, but he got too nervous."
"Phil plays the guitar?" I wonder out loud.
"Ya, I hear him play from my room. When I have nightmares he sings and plays for me."
"Wow." I gasp under my breath as she starts to pull me down a dark, but short hallway.
"Ya he wouldn't let my parents pay for the ring or anything; he did it all on his own. He was petrified to give it to you, afraid you would say no or get scared."
"What do you mean?" She stops in front of the last door, it's closed.
"Phil didn't want you to get you know...scared. He doesn't want you to think you guys are going too fast or something. I don't know, all I know is that he truly loves and cares about you."
"Oh." I quietly say. I can feel the tears start to well up in my eyes but I don't give them the pleasure of rolling down my face.
"Well, your mom is in here. She slowly opens the door and turns on the lamp. It admits a soft glow across the small room. The floor is cold on my sock covered feet, there lays a bed by the wall and the lamp. My mother lays in it and she looks...peaceful. Wow, the emotion looks good on her.
"She's been sleeping for a while but she is a heavy sleeper. I'll let you two be; you can come back when you want to."
She squeezes my hand and then slowly closes the door. I awkwardly stand and stare down at her. How ironic that she was just doing this to me about two days ago. I find a chair in the corner and sit down as I just keep starring at her. Her eyes are closed and she looks relaxed; I have never seen her look like this before, but I have never really watched her sleep before. Her chest rises steadily under the covers.
"I just want you to be okay." I whisper to her as I hear the door creak open.
