Lots of Crying

Phil:
I turn around to spot Dan's mother starring at us; looking like she just saw a ghost.
"H-hi Ms.Howell."  I still have Dan cradled in my arms, but he is straining his neck to see her, so I bring him back up right on his feet. I hold his shoulders. I don't exactly know what to expect from him.
Is he mad? Angry? Both? Well he is obviously feelings all sorts of emotions, but which ones will he show to her?
As we stand over Dan's silent mother I realize how short she is compared to us. Dan and I are almost the same height except for the one inch I have on him (he is 6'2 while I am 6'3), but she seems to be about five (maybe six) inches shorter then Dan. I also saw how similar her and Dan resemble each other in appearance. The dark brown curly hair, the face shape, and the two models on the cheek.
"Mom?" Dan finally speaks, and I'm a bit startled by the sudden break in silence. A few moments later tears start to stream down her face. I look at Dan; not knowing what to do. He looks at me too, and he's scared so I take Ms.Howells arm in mine, Dans hand in my other and I lead them to the living room. I sit Dan's mother down on the leather couch facing the T.V, and Dan down on the matching leather love seat perpendicular to the T.V.
"I understand that there is a lot of built up emotion between you two. The best way to resolve it and get past this is too talk this out." I look at both them sitting down, as I stand over them. They both have wide eyes starring up at me, and I have to resist a ginormous urge to not ruffle Dan's adorably messy hair, and kiss his moles. But, I hated seeing him in pain. Crying night after night about this. This had to happen. I smile down at both of them before I start to walk out of the living room. Suddenly though, I feel a hand on my arm and I turn around to see Dan. He is standing up with worry and fear swirling around in his beautiful brown eyes. His tight shirt is all wrinkly from him sleeping in it; his red jeans were still tightly fit around his hips though.
"Stay...please." His hand is strongly gripping my upper arm, but he sounds as if at any moment he could break. That he would just shatter into a million pieces right here on this very floor. I wouldn't let that happen; it's my job to be there for him.
"Okay." I whisper back; taking his hand in mine. That's when he leans forward and kisses me. It's full of passion, and lust and I love every minute of it.
"Thank you." He quietly says as he pulls away and forces a smile on his face. I squeeze his hand and smile back. Once we both are sitting down in the love seat I'm starring at the floor; griping Dan's hand. I look up to see he is starring at his mom, but she is looking down at the floor with a sad expression.
"Dan?"
"Mother." Dan replies coldly.
"No offense Phil, I think you are a lovely person but can we just be alo-"
"No!" His mother had started to give me a small smile, but any trace of it vanished once Dan interrupted her.
"Mom, Phil is...Phil is my safe place." He squeezes my hand as he says this.
"Dan, I know but-"
"No mom!" He interrupts again "When you weren't there for me Phil was, okay?"
She is starring him in the eyes, but it seems as though she i'sent even there any more. She nods once, slowly. Dan is tapping his leg quickly. I can tell he is nervous. I place my free hand on his leg and rub it assuringly. We catch each other's eyes and I nod for him to speak.
I know he can do it.
"Mom," Dan starts out "why..." His hand becomes tighter around mine. He takes a shaky breath in and then out. "Why were you with...so many guys after dad left?"
"Well," she looks around nervously and I notice they both bite their bottom lip when they become anxious. "I was pretty heartbroken by your dad's sudden death, so I thought I could mend my heart by trying to find someone else."
"But, they were such horrible people?!" Dan is quick to respond, and he sounds confused and a bit angry.
"Dan, I'm sorry I'm so so so sorry. I was just trying to get over your father by taking any one who would take me."
"But...why?!"
"I don't know...how else I can explain it." Their is silence as Dan stares down at our hands. They are woven together on my thigh that is touching Dan's. In which my hand is laying on. His leg has stopped moving, and his jeans are soft.
"Why did you start drinking?" Dan avoids eye contact with his mother. Which isn't all that hard because she is starring past Dan.
"It would cloud over my mind. Make me forget some of the pain. But, it would only push it down so when I was sober all the pain would just come back stronger." Dan is looking her in the eyes now.
"Mom," Dan's voice almost breaks, and I take my hand form his thigh and wrap it around his waist. "Look at me."
She turns her head, so now her eyes are lined up with Dan's.
"Why did you abandon me, when dad died." With that his mother cracks. She starts to just sob uncontrollably while covering her face with her hands. She is shaking all over. Almost instantly Dan gets up, sits next to her, and wraps his arms around her. She leans into him, and he begins to run his hands over her hair.
Dan rests his head on top of his mothers, and I can see the tears begin to run down his face as well. His mother try's to speak through sobs
"Dan, I'm so sorry. I-I-I was so selfish and such a jerk. Who am I kidding I still am, but I am so-" Dan hushes her and hugs her tighter, as she begins to cry harder. While all this is happening I sit there, on the now roomy love seat, and watch them speak about the past and be as quiet as I possibly can. There is a lot of apologizing from Ms.Howell, and some explaining. Dan said that he wanted to be a family again, and she said that's all she ever wanted. She agreed to stop drinking, and that she would get help. Lots of hugs. Lots of crying.  And, it all happens in a larger amount of time. When they are finally done they look over at me, and I smile happily.
"I'm glad you two made up!" Dan giggles as does his mother at my comment.
"Thank you Phil. I'm so grateful for your caring and considerate family."
"Hey," I begin gazing over into Dan's glossy brown eyes "anything for a Howell."
