2 weeks had gone by and Marina hadn't spoken one word to Jai. She tried avoiding him, but it was nearly impossible. He was literally everywhere.
There were many times where the gang would have dinner together and of course Jai would show up with Beau. Marina didn't speak to him though. Mostly because she was afraid.
She'd finally realized how she felt.
She was scared to admit to herself that she still loved him. She couldn't ever stop loving him. Their love was something special and passionate and a love like that doesn't just fade. But she was also scared of Luke. Now, she'd never thought that she'd admit that, but she was growing terrified of him.
Luke was infamous for his short temper. And he would throw the biggest rage fits ever now over the littlest of things. It scared Marina, seeing Luke so violent and out of control. She didn't recognize him anymore.
She knew it was mostly Jai's fault. Whenever he'd be around, he'd always provoke Luke, poking and poking at him until he snapped. She didn't understand why though. Jai was never like that.
People really do change.
Now Marina currently sat on the floor of the living room, many shoe boxes surrounding her. She'd found them stored away in the basement when she was digging for some Halloween decorations. The boxes contained many souvenirs and pictures, mostly taken by Luke and others she'd taken herself.
Her breath caught in her throat as she came upon a photo of her and none other than Chelsey. The two girls looked so young, both with shorter hair and smiling faces, their eyes showing nothing but happiness. Marina remembered that day perfectly. It was the first day in their new apartment, back when they'd both started college.
It was taken after they'd finished unpacking and Chelsey had pulled out her camera, insisting that they'd capture the moment forever. Marina didn't even realize she was crying until she watched a tear fall into the old picture, tricking down to the floor.
She missed Chelsey. So much. But she was dead. The two girls had made plans of how they'd stay friends forever and marry, have kids, and grow older by each other's sides. But that would never happen. She wasn't coming back.
Marina never coped with her death properly. She lived in a lie, thinking that Chelsey's demise was a gang incident, being at the wrong place at the wrong time. But that wasn't what happened. Ever since Jai had returned her memories, she's felt nothing but guilt.
It was her fault Chelsey was dead. She died so Marina could live. And Marina found that everything but fair.
She needed Chelsey more than anything right now. She didn't know what to do. She loved Luke, but also loved Jai. It was official. She wasn't hiding it anymore.
As she kept digging through the box, she picked one up of her and Jai that made her heart hurt even more. This was taken when they had first began dating. The two were kissing in the woods, the spot where they had their first date. The picture was slightly blurry since Jai had taken it without a steady hand. But Marina loved it nonetheless.
She missed that. Missed him, missed them being a couple. And she'd take it all back if she just had the courage to.
The door suddenly opened, making Marina jump and toss the picture back into the box.
She turned her head and was met with Luke. He hadn't been home in days. Marina tried calling but it kept going straight to voicemail. She was worried sick but Daniel reassured her that he was fine and just out being Luke.
She stood up and the two eyed each other, tension hanging thick in the air. She was contemplating whether or not she would finally admit her feelings. All of them.
"We need to talk." She blurted out and picked up the boxes, setting them down on the coffee table.
"So talk." Luke snapped and slumped on to the couch carelessly, his eyes meeting hers.
Marina took in a sharp breath, trying to maintain her patience and cool. "I...I don't like your behavior lately, Luke. You're so...distant and angry all the time. It's not like you and it worries me, scares me actually."
Luke's hard gaze softened slightly and he parted his lips to speak but Marina cut him off. "Look...I love you. But this isn't working out. We're not working out. I think we need a break."
Luke sulked, defeated. But he couldn't seem to stop the angry words from flowing out of his mouth. "I get it. You love Jai, don't you? That's what it is. You're just trying to find an excuse to leave me and go running back to him."
He flashed in front of her, Marina's back hitting the wall and she yelped, looking up at him with fearful eyes. "That's not true..." She said, her voice cracking slightly.
"Yes it is!" Luke yelled out, his fist making contact with the wall behind her head. She let out a startled gasp, her small body beginning to shake violently.
Realization hit Luke and his eyes softened, hanging his head low in shame. "I-I'm sorry, Marina. I'm so fucking sorry. For everything. Please don't leave me. I need you..I love you."
His head was now on her shoulder and Marina raised a shaky hand to Luke's hair, running her fingers through it gently. Her heart was beating incredibly fast and she wrapped his arms around her waist in an attempt to comfort her but it didn't work one bit.
She didn't know what to say. She couldn't speak. Leaving him would be harder than she'd thought. She now knew what Luke was capable of. He would hurt her, intentionally or not.
"It's okay. It's okay, Luke. I'm not going anywhere."
Lies.
