Chapter Five

Don’t trust words, trust actions.”

Daniel and I got into his old beat-up car. I was sat in the passenger seat, and he was right next to me driving. I averted my eyes to him and took in his features. He was young. He had brown hair that he occasionally ran his hands through, and a few locks kept falling on his forehead, proving that he needed a haircut. He had a nice set of green eyes, too. In overall, he was quite handsome.

He shot me a sideway glance, his eyes shining with intensity.

He handed me a blanket and I looked at it in confusion before he said, “Cover yourself with this so no one would see you.”

“Where are you taking me?”

“I’m not sure.”

I covered my face with the blanket, as we sat in silence.

I couldn’t see anything, and I knew that that’s when my hallucinations usually start.  As always, when all I can see is darkness, I start imagining Noah.

Noah stared at me with big eyes and they showed terror, “Lauren, who is this?”

I smiled knowingly to myself, he was jealous.

“He’s going to help me run away!” I excitedly said to Noah, “his brother has the same story as mine. He is a good person! He’s going to help me find you.”

Despite my eagerness, Noah only looked at me disapprovingly.

The scenery suddenly changed, and we were not in Daniel’s car anymore, instead we were on that familiar beach we once went surfing to. The beach wasn’t packed like before, it was empty. There was no one but Noah and me.

“You actually trust him?” Noah asked while tsking, “It’s time for you to stop being so innocently stupid. You are not in a movie, Lauren! In real life, no one can be trusted, despite how harmless they seem!”

The picture suddenly faded away before I could utter a word, and I was back under the blanket in that old, smelly car.

I kept thinking about Noah’s words. He always had a sense of rationality, and his words were always right.

Maybe he was right about Daniel being a bad guy, too, I still was unsure.

Daniel cut off the engine, and it seems that we’ve reached our destination.

“We’re here,” Daniel informed me, “Keep the blanket on your face.”

He slowly helped me out of the car, and I felt like I was a hostage. He helped me up the stairs, and my blood was slowly running cold with each step we took. I think we’ve entered, because I can hear a lot of chatter. Something seemed off, I just couldn’t decipher what yet.

I heard Daniel say to someone excitedly; “Think of how much money I can take by handing her in!”

As soon as I heard those words, I gritted my teeth and snatched the blanket off of my face. I realized that I was in a pub, and everyone was staring at me like I was some sort of alien.

I stared at Daniel with hatred burning into my eyes. I felt my face heat up with anger as I curled my fist and punched Daniel, hard. He fell to the floor, covering his nose with his palm.

Tears trickled down my face as I kicked him once more with my foot, to which he cringed in pain. I felt guilty for not listening to Noah. I heard people cheering at me, telling me to hit him again, but they were only a background noise.

One of the guys was readying himself to catch me and I suddenly felt threatened so I ran. I ran as fast as my feet could take me, and I felt his footsteps behind me. I strained myself to run harder, my chest rapidly moving up and down.

I slowed my pace and turned to look at their fierce eyes.

“You can’t run of us, you crazy woman!” One of them spat.

I only glared at him and forced my weak body to continue running but I couldn’t anymore. My body hit the wall, and my eyes slowly closed as I fell unconscious.

----------------------

I woke up to the sight of blood. The guys that were once chasing me were now lying on the ground, blood covering their bodies. They weren’t dead, just unconscious.

I realized that my alter ego had saved me from dying, and I was thankful.

I noticed that I was in a familiar area. My mind tried to retain information to why I found this place familiar, and I realized that I have a house here.

A smile formed on my face as I remembered that Noah’s house was close to mine. I shivered with delight, knowing that I was in the right place.

I started running in different directions trying to find the house.

After about what seemed like an hour, I found it. It was white, this house, and it can be recognized anywhere. I hysterically ran towards it, and when I got to the doorstep, I started pushing the bell rapidly. I stood in front of the house for than three minutes before I finally registered that no one was inside.

I wondered where the spare key would be. I tried looking under the mat, but it wasn’t there. I looked everywhere, knowing that it was supposed to be somewhere.

I suddenly remembered that Noah used to put it out back, so I ran towards the backyard eagerly. I rushed to the dead plants and stuck my hand in the soil. I smiled in satisfaction once I found the key.

I rushed back to the door and opened it while walking inside, and I was immediately hit by the familiar and comforting smell of Noah.

“Noah!” I cried my voice echoing throughout the room, but I got no response.

“Say something…” I said, my voice breaking at the end. I swallowed the imaginary lump in my throat as I walked up the stairs.

“Noah!” I tried again, “You don’t have to hide anymore! I’m here, you’re alive and I’m sure of it! I’m not giving up until you show yourself!”

I reached his room, and with shaky hands I entered. I found his bed neatly made, and his closet door was open. I crawled inside the closet and I saw one of his shirts and jackets hung up, and I couldn’t help the tears that were falling down on my face like a river. I undressed the hanger from the jacket and I held it so tightly, as if I was afraid it would disappear.

I found his cologne on the bedside table, and I sprayed some on the bed and laid there.

I don’t know for how long I just laid there, thinking about everything. I was getting restless, and I knew I had to sleep. I tried to keep my eyes open, knowing that if I closed them, everything around me will turn into bits and pieces.

My doppelganger had a bright side, I guess. I can face my enemies and with one blink of an eye they’d be dead. It made me feel strong. The disturbing image of the innocent girl I killed filled my head, and the feeling of strength was gone as fast as it came.

She was a girl with a dream, and I killed it. I shivered, remembering how monstrous I was on the inside.

A sound woke me up from the bottomless pit I was drowning in.

“Lauren…” the sweet voice of Noah’s said.
