Kevin had just picked Leah up and for the first time in the past two days Scott and Mitch were finally alone. Scott shut the door behind them and turned around looking at Mitch nervously.
Scott realized quickly how sweaty his hands were and how his heart was racing with anxiety. He didn't want to talk about it anymore but he knew that they needed too.
Mitch looked at him sensing Scott's discomfort. He approached Scott and wrapped his arms around him carefully. Scott relaxed a little but knew that this was only the calm before the storm.
Mitch kissed Scott's cheek before pulling away grabbing his hand. He pulled Scott into the living room and they sat on the two separate couches.
"I know you don't want to talk about this trust me I don't either but we need to." Mitch spoke and Scott nodded gulping.
Mitch took a deep breath, "I'm sorry that I didn't notice that whole time, Scottie. I'm so so sorry. I should've noticed I know that but why? Why didn't you come to me?" Scott fidgeted with his hands.
"There's nothing you could've done Mitch-" Mitch cut him off.
"There would have been if you told me." Scott winced he knew he should've told him but he couldn't.
"He threatened you, Mitch! This was the only way I could guarantee your safety! I made sure you would never be near him and that you didn't know. If you did know than you would've done something and you could've gotten hurt. Nothing matters more to me than-" Mitch cut him off again.
"Don't you understand that nothing else matters to me but you too! You took away any possibility of me saving you!"
"Obviously not! You did save me, Mitch!" Scott tried to consul him but Mitch was still angry.
"After Leah told me! Leah! Your daughter! If you told me than..." he stopped himself. He knew that that was unfair to Scott. It wasn't his fault. He was too late though. Scott knew what he was going to say.
"What!? If I told you then maybe Leah wouldn't have lived in that abusive house! Yeah I fucking know that! You don't get it Mitch! I was so scared! He said he was going to kill you! If I said anything I knew something bad would happen."
"I get that but something good could've happened to! We could've called the police we could've-" Scott cut him off shaking his head.
"Yeah but I didn't tell you. I didn't call the police. What is this solving Mitch?" He asked and Mitch shook his head wiping some tears that had fallen.
"I just wish this didn't happen. I wish he never hit you. I wish none of that happened to you. You didn't deserve it." Scott nodded looking down. While it was happening it was really hard to think that he didn't deserve it.
"You didn't Scott. I know that he made you think that you did but you didn't." Mitch said looking at him but Scott still just looked down.
"I don't think that i deserved the initial hit but all the ones after I did. I should've told someone or talked to the police so everyone of them after that first one is my fault." He said and Mitch's heart broke. He didn't mean that.
Mitch sat down next to Scott and grabbed his hand. "What he did to you was not your fault. He chose to drink that much. He chose to hit you. It had nothing to do with you. All that matters now is that he's gone and you're right here. Safe."
Scott finally looked up at him, "Why did I marry him? Why? All of this could have been avoided if I didn't marry him." He said with tears in his eyes.
"You loved the person he used to be. He used to be a good guy or at least he acted like it. I never knew even when he was bad...I didn't know." Mitch said looking down.
"That's because I didn't tell you. I should have." Scott said and Mitch shook his head.
"Why do we keep blaming ourselves? Yes there are things we both should've done but we both wouldn't have the need to if it wasn't for him. It's not our fault and it's especially not your fault." Mitch said and Scott tried to believe him he really did but after Alex he lost all of his self confidence.
He didn't want Mitch to know that though. It's too much on him.
"Mitch?" He asked and Mitch hummed a response looking at him. They both were looking to each others eyes, there faces barely a few inches apart.
"I love you, you know that right? You're like the only good thing in my life besides Leah right now and I don't know what I would do without you. I don't even wanna know what would've happened to me if you weren't there." Scott said and Mitch smiled sadly.
"Well we don't have to think about that because I was there and I'm not going anywhere ever." Mitch smiled and so did Scott.
"I love you too, you know? I don't know what I would've done if I lost you. You're my everything. I hope you know that." Mitch said and Scott nodded but Mitch knew he didn't believe it.
Mitch tilted Scott's head in his direction, "I'm serious. I'm going to prove it to you some how." He said and Scott nodded trying to look away again but Mitch tilted his head back.
He leaned in and pressed his lips to Scott's softly. He wanted to make sure this was okay. He soon realized it was when Scott slowly deepened the kiss and gently grabbed Mitch's jaw to bring him closer.
Scott's heart rate started to quicken, this is the happiest he's been in a long time. It was just as he had imagined it would be; kissing the love of your life.
He was in love with Alex at one point but kissing him didn't feel like this. No, this was different. He felt relaxed, safe, amazing. He wanted Mitch closer to him. He slowly started to move forward, gently pushing Mitch down lower to the couch. His back started to touch the couch and they slowly laid on the couch fully.
Scott held Mitch's lower back in his left hand, balancing his elbow on the couch cushion. Mitch gently slipped his hand under Scott's shirt but felt him tense.
Mitch stopped immediately and Scott's pulled away. He buried his face in Mitch's neck. "I'm sorry." He whispered but Mitch just pulled his hand out from under and wrapped both his hands around his waist.
"Don't apologize it's okay. Thank you for stopping me." He whispered and Scott let all his tears fall. Mitch held his trembling body and whispered soothing things in his ear to calm him down.
"He just... He would never stop..." he whispered between sobs and Mitch's heart broke. He held Scott tighter and felt tears start to come down.
"I'm so sorry Scottie. You never deserved any of that." He whispered and Scott started to calm down. Mitch traced random shapes in Scott's back until his breathing became even.
Mitch silently cried trying not to wake a now sleeping Scott. He couldn't believe all of this had been happening right in front of his eyes and he didn't see it. He couldn't believe how strong Scott had been, he was so proud that he made it through. He survived and he was going to be okay.
Hopefully...
