Ch. 9

(Two days later, Hannah's POV)

I paced back and forth in my room. Felix was still in the hospital, in the ICU. The doctor had said he was in critical condition. What if he dies?

I heard a quiet knock on my door. "Come in," I replied, and in stepped my mother. She looked tired. Felix was in the hospital she worked at, so she knew of his condition.

"How is he?" I questioned urgently. My mother just shook her head.

"He's alive, but still not doing well. That bullet sliced one of his major arteries and he lost a dangerous amount of blood. He may not make it, but there is still a chance he could," she said.

My eyes grew wide and I felt tears swell. I sat down on my bed and put my head in my hands. Felix might die, all because of those stupid men.

I looked up at my mom. "Mom?" when she looked at me I continued, "Why? Why did they do this to him? Who would want to-"

I was stopped mid-sentence by my father bursting through the door. "Hey, guys, guess what? We're going on a hunting trip! Pack up. We leave tomorrow," he announced.

I stood up and glared at him. "Dad, I'm not going anywhere. Felix is in really bad condition and I can't just leave! Why would you even think that I would just leave him?" I asked him. Immediately his expression grew dark.

"We are leaving tomorrow. Pack a bag. No discussion," he warned.

"I'm not leaving Felix! Besides, mom has work! She can't just leave either!" I said, my voice rising.

"He will be fine. I called the hospital and took off three days of vacation for your mother. Now get packed. End of discussion," he commanded.

"No! I bet you're the one who got those guys to hurt Felix! I hate you!" I screamed, then ran down the stairs and grabbed my car keys, rushing out the door and driving away from that house.

(a week later)

I awoke with an intense aching in my neck. I sat up in the chair I fell asleep in and rolled my shoulders, then heard a familiar voice I haven't heard in almost two weeks.

"Hey, Teddy Bear. I'm glad you're finally awake," the scratchy voice said.

I raised my head to see Felix looking over at me with his beautiful blue eyes, a smile on his face. He took a deep breath, his oxygen mask caving in slightly.

I jumped forward and hugged him tightly, bursting into tears. "Felix! You're awake! Felix I missed you so much! You're alive! You're alive.." I cried, feeling the tears flowing from my eyes.

I rested my head on his chest and heard his heart beating. It seemed irregular, a little sloppy. But he was alive.

"Yeah, I'm alive. You didn't think I would just leave you, did you?" He gave a small chuckle and wrapped a weak arm around me. I held him tighter.

"I thought you were gonna die," I uttered through my tears. I looked up at his face to see him shake his head.

"Not when you're still here, I won't," he assured me. "I love you, Teddy Bear," he added.

With those five words, the flood gates opened. I clutched him as tight as I could and cried.
