She slammed the door shut and stood in the hall, not taking off her shoes or coat or setting down her bag and keys.

"What's wrong?" My roommate looks like someone just drowned her cat.

Her eyes were frozen on the floor; she couldn't look up.

"Why does it hurt so much?" She cried, leaning against the door and sliding down to the floor.

"Oh no. What happened?" I abandon my textbooks to sit near my best friend and attempt to comfort her.

"It feels like my heart is actually being torn in two. I can feel every piece of that stupid organ ripping to shreds." I've never seen anyone look so broken. Her eyes were wide, jaw slack, hands trembling.

"Are you..."

"I don't know."

How do you fix someone's heart when you can't fix your own? It's like staring at a difficult puzzle for hours at a time but never making any progress. My poor best friend and I are no strangers to pain, but somehow, the sting of trusting people never dulls.
