A faint, pale blue ceiling fills my blurred vision. I feel nothing, only cold and numb. My eyelids flutter open then close as I blink, the only movement I am able to complete. A steady beeping greets my ears in the eerie silence. Even though everything is quiet, I know I am not alone. My breathing picks up from its shallow rhythm as I muster all of the strength I had left to turn my head.
A clear plastic tube runs from a bag held on an IV pole down to the needle injected into a vein in my arm. The fluid inside is tainted a yellow-grey. This is it- they are finally killing me. A bright white light flashes just outside the room, but I already know who is keeping a watchful eye over me. Sam's footsteps tap lightly against the floor as he walks over, stopping a couple feet away from my bedside. His gaze is calculating-if not cold. I just blink up at him.
He stares down at me for a little while longer. Our eyes don't break eye contact. Even though my eyelids feel heavy I don't blink.
"So how does it feel to be completely helpless for once?" he asks with a controlled tone, but I can still hear the relief in his voice.
Sam was glad I wasn't able to spring off of the bed and attack him. I finally cave in and blink. My eyebrows manage to come together slightly.
Sam chuckles at my weakened state, "Oh yeah... I forgot this serum was specifically designed by League forensic scientists to make endowed individuals so weak they aren't even able to speak." He pauses, rubbing the bottom of his jaw with two fingers, "This stuff is pretty rare here Chloe-you should feel privileged to be a participant. Then again...it's for our own benefit."
At first I thought Argon had been wrong about the strength of the League. As of now, I believed his claims wholeheartedly. I was seeing an entirely new side of this organization, one that needed to be stopped at all costs. Argon's mission could not fail.
"In four days you have managed to critically injure six level five agents. Two of them have third degree burns because of your stunts," Sam briefs me. How could I have been at the League for four days already?
Sam's enraged voice brings me back to focus, "do you even realize they are human beings with families and loved ones to provide for?"
If I was able to speak or move for that matter I would have just shrugged. They should have been better prepared. After all I was only a sixteen year old girl. The least those agents could do is beat me, but they didn't and suffered the consequences. A frustrated sigh comes out of Sam's mouth as he pinches the bridge of his nose. His darkened sky blue eyes close briefly. After a minute passes his eyes open again; which brings him on another tangent I was forced to listen too.
"You even took down an agent-who is in the final stages of becoming a leader I might add. He's currently on medical leave. You managed to piss him off real good. He's not used to encountering another fire endowed that is stronger than him. Not to mention one that is seven years junior to him."
My thoughts immediately go back to that cocky fire endowed agent I beat without a sweat. He must have been the leader in training Sam was referring too.
Sam sighs again before hovering above me. He leans down, his eyes not changing their dark shade. He looks more threatening this way. I hold my breath in anticipation as his cold and calculating gaze searches my face. His lips purse and for a moment his eyebrows draw together. Moments later the dark indigo transitions back to sky blue.
"Your eyes..." he ponders to himself, "where have I seen them before?"
I barely manage to raise an eyebrow. Sam blinks and his eyes become cloudy as if he was in a daze.
The door to the room opens suddenly, causing him to break out of whatever day dream he was having. Sam's posture straightens as he turns around, his back now facing me. Whoever had entered the room was blocked from my view.
"Agent Remington," a smooth and mesmerizing voice greets professionally.
"Xavier...what are you doing here?"
Sam sounds surprised to see this Xavier character here, and that made me curious.
There is a brief moment of silence before the mystery man responds.
"I need to confirm something, please move aside Sam."
So Sam and this man are on first name basis. My curiosity only deepened with this fact. Sam steps to the side allowing me to see Xavier for the first time.
He had to be in his late thirties or early forties. From what I could tell he was tall, six foot maybe, and had a semi-muscular build. He was dressed in formal wear, a white buttoned down dress shirt, dark grey tie, and black slacks. His longer dark brown, almost black hair complements his fair skin. Unique and wise violet colored eyes stand out. A look of longing and concern surfaces in them as we make eye contact.
"Xavier...?" Sam questions with curiosity.
"It's been confirmed..." Xavier responds, looking hesitant to break eye contact with me, "could you please allow us to speak alone?" He asks finally, turning to face Sam who nods.
An expression of reminiscence forms on Sam's face. With one last swift look at me, he nods again before leaving the room. I am now alone with a complete stranger.
The obvious aura endowed walks over to my bedside.
"Good evening Chloe. My name is Xavier Gains- the aura endowed leader of the League," he begins. "This also might come as a surprise to you...but I am also your uncle. We have a lot to talk about since you've been proclaimed dead for the past eight years."
If my face wasn't numb, my mouth would have been gaping and some select choice words would have escaped. How in the world could this aura endowed could be my uncle? I've been with Argon since I could remember, and what the heck did he mean by saying I'd been proclaimed dead for eight years.
There was no way this was happening. I was not a family member of a guy who's supposed to be one of my biggest enemies. He was lying to confuse me-deceive me. It was not possible we were related. Impossible.
Typing was kind of slow going with my injured finger, but I managed to update another chapter! Hope you guys enjoyed it! Also what do you think of Xavier and the cliffhanger? I have a pretty busy week ahead of me, so I won't be able to update another chapter this week. I am hoping to get another one up by next week Wednesday. So stay tuned and have a great week! :)
*Also, for the life of me I can't envision or think of an actor in their late 30's early 40's that I think Xavier resembles. If you have a person that comes to mind I'd love to know who you envision Xavier to look like.*
