"Oh, Kiera. Finally you're back,"my sister said as she heard me enter the house.
I quickly put the ramen on the kitchen counter and went inside my room. I sat on my bed as I stared at our family picture which was placed on my bedside table. Tears didn't fall but my heart was hurting too much. Missing someone we love is just unbearable. It makes us crazy.
Suddenly the door of my room opened, showing my sister. "Hey Kiera,"she started but stopped once she saw me.
I purloined a glance at the mirror and my eyes were red and puffy. My sister then sighed and took a seat beside me.
"Kiera, it's alright. I know how you feel. And also I might have to leave the day after tomorrow, "my sister informed me and I was shocked.
"That fast? I know you're busy. I told you that you didn't have to come here. But still, it was great to meet you again,"I said.
My sister smiled at me but she looked like she was about to cry. I knew that she had been hiding her pain and sorrow under that smile of hers. Because we were undergoing the same situation.
"I hope you'll hold on and enjoy your life here. You've always wanted to move to Korea for good right?"she stated.
"Well, it's true. I also hope you'll be succesful in your studies and quickly live with us, alright?"
"Of course. Now come on, breakfast is ready. Grandma and Grandpa just woke up too."
All of us were seated on the dining table and was enjoying the breakfast thar sister had made us. She was also a good cook. She was as good as my mother.
"So what's going to happen to the restaurant?"my Grandmother asked.
My sister looked at me and answered, "Well, I actually heard that Mom and Dad were planning to close it down or just sell it to someone."
My grandmother raised her eyebrows, probably not believing what my sister, Cassia had said. "Ah, it's not like that," I started. "They wanted to close it because they thought that it's been long since they were in the business and were planning to stop for good. And in return, they were planning to move here and help you with your restaurant instead."
"I see. So what do you think we should do now?"my Grandmother questioned and glanced at my Grandfather.
"I think we should close it down for good. I'm sure it's what they would want,"my Grandfather suggested.
We nodded in approval.
--
It was already nighttime and I was washing the dishes with my sister after dinner.
"Kiera,"my sister started. "I have to leave by tomorrow night. I wish I could stay longer."
"Really? That's too soon. It's fine, you should get back. Don't worry about me,"I said and my phone rang.
I checked the caller ID and it was from Mark. Panic rose in my throat and I glanced at my sister. She nodded at me as a sign that I should answer it.
I rushed into my bedroom and locked it.
"Hey, sorry. I was doing something just now."
"Hello, it's alright,"he said and then it was silent.
I coughed. "So, why are you calling me?"
"I just... Do you wanna go out tonight? Let's have dinner since I'm free right now. Besides, we haven't had a proper first meeting,"he explained.
I was flabbergasted by the invitation. "Oh, sure," I finally replied.
"Alright then, see you at the convience store that day?"he asked.
"That'd be great. Oh, let's meet in an hour. I have to do something if you don't mind? I mean, if you're not that hungry,"
"Oh, not at all. See you then,"he said and ended the phone call.
I locked my phone and unlocked my door. That was when I just remembered that I just had dinner. Well, I couldn't just decline his offer and it was actually fine with me since I didn't eat much for dinner today.
I went into the kitchen and finished off what I left. Once my sister and I were done, she asked me if I wanted to watch a drama together with her.
"Oh, actually I'm going out tonight. Can I?"I asked.
"Who are you going with?"she asked while picking a drama.
"A friend. I'll come home early,"I explained.
"Alright then, just be careful,"she reminded me.
I got changed and went to the place we promised to meet.
When I arrived, Mark was already there and he waved at me.
"Hey, are you feeling alright?"he asked.
"Yes, so what are we eating tonight?"I asked.
"Mind eating jajangmyeon?"
"Great choice," I complemented and we were off to a restaurant nearby. Mark told me that they had the best jajangmyeon around Seoul.
Once we were done, I offered to pay for him. At first he declined but lastly we agreed.
"It was great having dinner with you,"Mark said to me.
"You were good at picking the best food,"I said.
"Um, so goodbye for now?"he asked.
"Are we meeting again tomorrow?"
"Well, I'm free tomorrow but let's see. I don't know what we should do,"he said.
"I'll think about it and I'll call you when I have something in mind for us to do tomorrow. Goodnight, Mark,"I said and was slowly walking backwards in the direction of my grandparents' house.
"Goodnight,"he waved at me and we walked our own path home. It was great, spending time with him and I somehow felt less lonely. I wish more good things were going to come. Mom, Dad, I'll try my best to be happy without you guys around.
