Chapter 4

I woke up around 3 am to my phone ringing like crazy. I looked over to see that Hayes was calling. I grabbed my phone and yelled out to the balcony to answer it because somehow the ringing hadn't woke up Lillie.

"Hello" I answered

"Kendall my parents are fighting and I-I just can't take it anymore you've got to help me. I've got to get away." He said

"Ok meet me at our meeting spot" I said before hanging up

I slipped on a sweatshirt and Nike shorts and some converse before quietly sneaking downstairs and out the front door.

It only took me about 5 minutes to get to our spot where Hayes was already waiting.

Even from the dim street lights I could tell he had been crying. His eyes were puffy and red. Before I said a word I grabbed him and hugged him.

"hey it's ok I promise. Why don't we go to our spot and talk about it." I said

Our spot. We only met a couple days ago and I already referring to it as our spot. Hayes and I have a special connection. I feel like I've know him forever and even the day I met him I talked to him like we'd been best friends all our life. He's different from anyone I've ever met before and I love that.

When finally reached the lake I got out the blanket and folded it out for the two of us.

I sat down while Hayes laid his head in my lap while looking up at the stars.

I soon noticed though that he wasn't looking at the stars. He was looking at me. In that moment he was looking at me like he never had before. He looked at me with the same passion and wonder as he looked at the stars with.

"I don't understand how my parents can fight like this. If you truly love someone how can you constantly fight with them. I just don't get it Kendall."

"I know Hayes , I know it's hard but you have to trust that things are going to be ok and get better. Im sure whatever is going on is going to blow by soon and it's all going to be ok." I said reassuring him

"No it's not going to be ok. My dad threatened to leave tonight. My parents are fighting and just like he could easily storm out and leave" He said quietly, "how can you leave someone you if you truly love them. Please tell me" he said now getting louder tears began to run down his face in anger as he sat up

I pulled him into a hug and just held him there. Right now he needs me more than ever just like I need him.

In this moment I realized that maybe he's my light in the darkness and maybe I'm his.

"Hayes, I don't know why people do things and sometimes I really wish I did but things happen and I know it's hard but it's not your fault. And look I'm here and I will never ever leave you I promise." I said looking him in the eyes

"Kendall"

"Yeah?"

"I love you. I really do."

I knew with all my heart that he meant what he said. I also knew with all my heart that I loved him too.

"I love you too Hayes"

"This may sound weird but... from the day I met you I haven't been able to get you out of my mind. You're so so beautiful and I love your personality more than anything. You're so sweet and caring and I just love everything that makes you, you. You're just so amazing." He said as he pushed back a lose hair that was hanging in my face

He left me speechless. All I could do was look a him and smile.

"You're so beautiful Kendall and don't you ever think otherwise" he whispered as he held me in his arms

"Thank you" I whispered

We stayed there and stared at the stars for while just like we did last time

"Im hungry" Hayes said randomly

"You know what, now that I think about it I am too." I said laughing

"How about we go grab something to eat then because I don't feel like going home"

I gathered our stuff and we headed over to the Grier house. He snuck in and grabbed his keys. As I stood outside I could hear his parents yelling. Soon he met me back in the driveway.

"Alright let's go"

We climbed in his truck and took off to IHOP, like the only place that's open at this time. Hayes turned on the radio and turned it up loud and rolled down the windows. There was nobody on the streets but us.

The street lights lit up the downtown area and the cool breeze blew my hair. In this moment I felt as if Hayes and I were the only ones in the world.

We arrived at the restaurant and jumped out of the car. When we went in we were the only ones there.

"Can I take your order?" A older looking lady asked as we took a seat

We told her our order and she went on our way.

"So, Hayes you've never really told me where you moved from or why you moved."

"Oh well I moved here from Wisconsin because of a job my dad got here in North Carolina" He said

"Oh wow that's awesome. Did you like it there?"

"I did but the people there weren't my favorite. I had a incident with a couple of people so I'm really glad to be here now."

"Oh what happened?" I asked

"I dated this girl and it stared a lot of crap between me and some other guys at my school"

"Oh I'm sorry"

"Yeah and it sucks because I have to go back there for thanksgiving and Christmas so I'll have to see them all again."

About that time our waiter came to our table with our food and drinks. We began eating and finished pretty quickly. The waiter brought us the check and we began to pay.

"Um Hayes"

"Yeah?"

"I just realized I don't have any money with me." I said feeling stupid

"It's alright I got you"

"Thank you so much I'll pay you back I promise"

"No that's ok don't worry about it"

He payed for our food and then we walked to the truck to leave. By now it was almost 6AM. Time had went by so quickly we didn't even realize it.

"Oh dang I've got to get home fast before my parents notice I'm gone." I said nervously

My dad usually wakes up about 6 or 6:30 and if he comes up to my room and sees I'm not there I'll be dead

Hayes sped down the road and made it to my house in about 5 minutes where it'd usually take 15.

"Thank you so much for everything! I'll see you at school" I said jumping out of the truck and running to my backyard so I could climb up the tree and onto my balcony to get in.

I made it just in time. Lillie had just woke up and my dad was knocking on my door.

"Good morning girls! Breakfast is ready downstairs" he said and then left as we began getting ready for the day.
