Chapter 24B: Drama, Drugs and Déjà Vu
Marissa goes to open the door whilst I quickly squeeze into the short black dress. It is vaguely similar to Marissa's however mine clinches as the hip and it is strapless. I pull on some of my sister black platform heels and I push my hair forward, having already made my hair up and makeup.
Marissa enters the room with Matty, who is backed up by Marco, Jimmy and Denny carrying two speakers and a console. "We're just going to set this up downstairs, and I'll put the food I brought with me out. Have you got drinks already? I didn't bring much."
"Drinks? Like Coca Cola and Fanta?" I panic. Jimmy and Denny laugh at this.
"No, stupid. Booze. Alcohol. Beer. Or even... WKD," grins Marco. I look at him blankly.
"I suppose I can look in my dad's drink cabinet," I say.
"Does Mr Nate own a lot of booze?" Says Denny, turning to Marissa.
"I'll go look," I butt in quickly, moving out the room. I run downstairs and I have to stop myself having a heart attack at the sight in the kitchen.
"Matty!" I scream. "What is this?!"
"Shit, she's found the weed," I hear Denny mutter.
"It's nothing princess," says Matty, sliding down my bannister.
"Wha - what? Nothing? I ask you why there is two bags of marijuana in my kitchen and two tables full of drink and you say it's 'nothing'?" I screech. He shrugs. "How did you afford this anyway?" I ask.
"I told you. I said I would use my dad's card," he shrugs again. "It's really no biggie."
I look through the door of the kitchen to the hallway where Denny and Marco are taking the speakers to my lounge. Jimmy is on his phone, and Marissa is hanging rather awkwardly on the stairs, looking as though there are places she would much rather be.
"Marissa, can I talk to you?" I call to her. I dodge Matty quickly as he rushes through to help Denny in the lounge.
Marissa joins me in the kitchen and I see her eyes widen at the drink and drugs. "Well..."
"I don't want to do this anymore, I'm freaking out!" I say, gripping her shoulders.
"KFC, followed by Eskimoo and a movie night at mine?"
"Didn't know Eskimoo we're open past five," I say.
"Pretty sure they are."
"It's on then girl."
"Jess can you just check the window? I think someone is here," says Matty, but his words are almost drowned out by the sudden blast of music coming from my living room. I am surprised at just how loud it is - my house is fairly large, with five rooms in the ground floor and three floors in total.
I hurry to the door to let the first people in - a group of girls and boys in my class. They are soon followed by more, and then the school rugby team turns up in a Ford and they immediately tackle Denny, Jimmy and Marco to the ground while Matty holds Marissa behind him protectively. She seems a lot less doubtful than she was before but is still not at ease, so doing the worst thing I could possibly do I offer her a drink. Now apart from the one evening where I allowed her into the contents of a bottle of Jack Daniels to give her enough courage to burgle Luke's house with me I have never seen my best friend drunk, but this is a whole new story.
Just thirty minutes later Marissa has broken out of her shy bubble and is sliding down my winding bannister and twerking - yes, twerking - upon her boyfriend. I grab her by the wrist to have a stern word with her, but Matty stops me. "Jess... She's having fun, see?" He says, grinning, and I smack him.
