***~Enjolras' POV~***

It had been hours since the volunteer had gone to spy on the police and we were all starting to grow restless but all I could really think of was Marie. I hadn't seen her since she ran away last night out if anger. All I'd been doing was trying to protect her and now she was out there somewhere, she could be hurt for all I knew.

"There he is!" Joly pointed and sure enough I spotted the elder volunteer coming towards us with his hands up.

"I have been to their lines and have heard their plans!" he assured us as some of the men move furniture so he could get around the barricade and moved it back into place. "They won't attack tonight, they plan to starve you out!"

"Liar!" everyone looked at Gavroche and out of the corner of my eye I could see the familiar volunteer's body tense. "I know this man, how are you Inspector Javert?"

At Gavroche's words I tensed as I looked over the volunteer to see that he was right. I recognized Marie's father and the cold look he had in his eyes as the men grabbed him. He was the top of the police yet I felt sorry for him.

"What do we do with him?" Marius asked me as I spotted two young boys watching me from the other end of the barricade. The smaller boy had familiar blue eyes that made me think of Marie before looking back at her father.

"Tie him up in the Café," I shook my head as they led him inside. Not a second later I could hear the fighting and went running inside to see that Javert had overpowered the others and punched me. I fell to the ground and before I could get back to my feet the young boy with blue eyes was standing between us and I could see something in Javert change. I quickly got up and as soon as I did he swung at me but I was ready. Without hesitation I pulled my fist back and swung it across his face. He fell to the ground instantly as the blue eyed boy walked away slowly. Just before he went outside I saw him glance back and I could have sworn that I saw tears rolling down his cheek.

***~Marie's POV~***

Watching my father knock Enjolras to the ground broke me and I couldn't help but step between them. As soon as I did though I could see the disbelief in my father's eyes. I looked like a little boy but then there were my sharp blue eyes that he seemed to recognize right away. Before either of could do anything though Enjolras was on his feet and he knocked my father to the ground, unconscious, with one punch. I was afraid to watch whatever was going to happen next so I headed outside with one look back to see Enjolras looking at me as tears spilled from my eyes.

"What was that!" Ephonie looked at me as if I were crazy.

"Don't give me that look," I shook my head as I sat back down on the barricade and just stared up at the bight sky. My father had recognized my eyes so what was to say that Enjolras wouldn't too?

"Who are you?" Gavroche climbed up and sat between Ephonie and I. We both avoided meeting his gaze which only made him give a small chuckle. "Did you two really think you could do this?"

"Gavroche you better keep quiet!" Ephonie warned him with a hiss.

"If Enjolras were to know he'd be quite displeased." He told us what we already knew as the sound if heavy footsteps echoed the street. I allowed myself to rise up and sure enough I saw dozens of men with guns in hand walking towards our barricade.

"Don't shoot!" Enjolras ordered everyone as I saw in kneel down so he couldn't be seen by the soldiers. "Save your gunpowder!"

"Who's there?" Francis' familiar voice called out as I pulled my own gun from my waistband and held it close to my chest where I knew my mother's ring hung from my neck, where no one could see it.

"French revolution!" Enjolras called out to them as everyone smiled at his words. It stayed hushed for a few moments before the gunshots rang out from the soldiers. I watched as Enjolras and the others fired back at them.

"Marie!" Ephonie hissed my name as I aimed my gun at Francis and fired a shot at the man. Sure enough it hit him in the chest and he collapsed to the ground in shock. I silently cried as I realized what I'd just done. I couldn't do that again so I knelt back down so I wasn't seen by them but when I looked back at the Café I could see my father looking at me with cold eyes.

In his eyes I was now a criminal and I didn't care about that. This was a fight that needed to be fought and I would do all I could until it was either over or my blood had been spilt. I finally broke my gaze with him and looked to see that Ephonie was no longer next to me but was running toward Marius a the top of the barricade. There was a soldier there that had his gun aimed at an unknowing Marius. In horror I watched as Ephonie tore the gun's barrel away from Marius and towards her just before the shot rang through the air. Ephonie collapsed and fell to the bottom of the barricade as Marius looked at her in horror before grabbing a torch and a barrel of gunpowder and rose to his feet.

"Back!" He spat at the soldier. "Back or I will blow this to the sky!"

"And you with it!" The soldier looked at him as if he were crazy but Marius wouldn't back down.

"And you with it." His words seemed to shake the soldier who quickly ordered his men back while Enjolras took the torch and barrel from Marius who rushed to Ephonie's side. I couldn't hear them as he pulled her to his arms and she handed him a folded paper. I knew my best friend was minutes from death and that she would die in the arms of the man whom she loved but didn't love her back. I wanted to run to her side and hold her myself but I knew I couldn't, that would blow my disguise.

Sure enough I watched as Ephonie's hand fell from where she had rested it on Marius' cheek. She was gone, my best friend was gone. We all watched as Marius cried for her as he held onto her lifeless body before Courfeyrac and Joly took her body from his arms and took her inside the Café. Marius sat there and cried for a few more moments before opening the paper Ephonie had given him. I watched as different emotions filled his eyes before he disappeared into a building but when he retuned he called for Gavroche.

"What have we gotten ourselves into?" I whispered quietly as I looked out at the street in front of the barricade where soldiers bodies laid in puddles of blood but there was one body that I didn't see. Francis. He must have lived through his wound and left with the others. My blood boiled at the thought. He was the reason we were all here! He had hurt Gavroche that day which had led me to leaving home and joining in this fight! If I had never come here then Ephonie might still be alive!

More dark hours passed and Gavroche eventually returned and sat with me on the barricade while we all waited for any sign of the soldiers. At the sound of heavy footsteps we looked to see and older man walking towards us. He was wearing a soldier's uniform with a gun in his hand. This earned him dozens if guns, including my own, aimed at him.

"I'm here as a volunteer!" he raised his hands as Jean and Grantaire opened a small spot in the barricade to let the man through. As soon as he was though they grabbed his arms and tore the gun from him while we all held our aim at the stranger's head. The man didn't fight though and Enjolras walked over to him with a cold look in his eyes.

"Do you see that man?" Enjolras nodded at my father who was still tied up and looked almost bored. "A volunteer like you! The Inspector will get what is coming to him and so will you!"

The man didn't look at Enjolras though but at something in the sky. I followed his gaze until I spotted the soldiers on the roofs above our heads with their guns aimed right at Enjolras' back.

"On the roof!" the volunteer broke from his hold and grabbed a gun before shooting at the soldiers. I fired at one myself and watched as both the men dropped dead but not before a sharp pain ripped through me.
