Chapter One - What keeps me awake

Monday. That was the first thing that popped into my head when I woke up. Honestly, I didn't care if I was absent to school. I mean, all my classes were easy enough, it's just that I knew I had to go to school for one thing-music class.

That was the only class I had that I really tried to put effort into. Don't get me wrong, I do my homework and study for tests in all my other classes, but music class? It was more than just some school subject.

One of the things that made music class music class was the teacher, Mrs. Bloom. She never gave us any boring assignments, and she was one of the rare people who really understood the concept of music.

And one of the reasons why I was particularly excited for class today was because today was the day that we had to submit our week-long assignment which was to write a song, but the title had to be a name of a color.

With that in mind, I got up from my bed and went about my daily routine. I ended up wearing a white blouse, jeans and braided my brown hair down my back. The thing is, my hair used to be a strawberry blonde color. But as years went by, it slowly turned darker until it reached the color it was now.

My brown color had a reddish tinge to it, and it showed when I let my hair loose. That was why I usually braided my hair-because when I braided it, the weird red parts of my hair were hidden (or at least unnoticeable.)

After breakfast, I walked out the door and biked my way towards the school. I hummed my assignment song 'blue' under my breath as I did so. When I arrived, I parked my bike in the bike rack and walked towards the school building.

It was in the middle of the school year, and I noticed that were was a new student that came in today. I knew because there was a flock of girls surrounding a dark-haired guy and a red Chevy truck in the school parking lot. I'd never seen the guy nor the truck before. I gave them one last glance before I focused my attention back in front of me.

When I entered the school building, my best friend Katie bombarded me with questions about my weekend.

"So did you see the movie?" she asked. Her blonde hair was loose today, and she wore a white sweater with some denim shorts. I shook my head.

"That's too bad," she frowned. "Oh, I know! We should see it on Friday!"

"Yeah except you forgot that Friday nights are my song-writing nights," I pointed out. She was about to complain when the bell rang and we went our separate ways for class.

The whole day was spent dozing in and out of consciousness. I swear, the only thing that kept me awake was the fact that music class was getting nearer and nearer by the minute.

As I was walking down the corridor on my way to lunch, I saw the guy from earlier talking to the Principal as I passed by his office window.

When the time came for me to head to my last class of the day, I practically ran down the halls and towards the music room where my favorite class was held.

I got into the room and settled myself at the back of the classroom, taking out the lyrics for 'blue'.

When Mrs. Bloom arrived, we all greeted her with enthusiasm. She started calling us one by one in alphabetical order to present our songs and sing a few verses of it.

My name was called, and I stood up and gave her the paper in which the lyrics and chords to my song were written. And just when I took a deep breath to begin singing, the door to the classroom swung open.

Standing there was our school principal and the same dark-haired guy from the hallway. He wore a black hoodie, jeans, and a shy smile. Principal Burkley introduced him as 'Blake'. He didn't mention a last name, but just the mere mention of the name 'Blake' was enough to send me on on the edge of hysterics.
