Chapter 9: Almost there

Another few boring hours. The fear wore off and I was sleepy again. Couldn't I just sleep a little? Well apparently not. We needed to get to my grandma as fast as possible. And that wasn't easy. Being awake for such a long time.

I was looking at the landscape around us. It was getting darker and that made the woods and the grassfields look much scarier than they were. I was glad we were inside.

My eyes started closing themselves slowly. I tried to open them. It didn't work. I was just to tired to do it. Yhe blackness was very comforting. It felt good to close my eyes for so long.

Oh no. I quickly opened my eyes. I fell asleep. The car was upside down. I saw a trail of broken bushes and grass.  That was the way we came from. I think. I was asleep so I didn't see it.

Filippa was already crawling out. She shouted at me to hurry up. I tried to ask her why, the crash was over, but the words wouldn't come out. Maybe it was the shock that we crashed.

I carefully opened the seat belt. I managed to get down without falling on my head so that was good. Filippa was standing a few metres from me and I started making my way over to her. She looked at me, ran to me and dragged me as far as she could from the car. My mind was still foggy and I didn't really understand why she did that but I was lucky.

The car exploded and I felt a big wave of heat go through me. It was so loud and bright that I had to shield my eyes and ears. It didn't help much.

We watched the rest of the car burn. "We'll need to go the rest of the way. It is just a few kilometres left. Unfortunately nome of our stuff survived the crash." I said. My voice worked. Yay!

"No?" She replied. She was holding up two backpacks. Filippa must have gotten them when I was unconscious from the crash or maybe I was asleep. I didn't know which.

We started walking. We still had a few kilometres left.

We didn't walk for a long time. It was already getting darker and darker as we went and there was no moon or stars on the sky. The sky was full of  big grey clouds that threatened to pour rain on us. We decided to find a good place for our tent, which we packed in to our backpacks when we were at the trashed appartment, and go to sleep afyer we put it up.

We were just walking and looking for a place to put the tent up when I saw some big shape in the distance. It was as big as a house. Maybe it was a house. We stepped of the road and went into the woods to see what we saw.

We could see the shape better, the clpser we got. I could see that it was a house made out of tree when we were about 15 metres from it. The house probably belonged to a hunter or a lumberjack.

We went inside hoping there was someone who could help us. Or at least a human. That would mean the attackers haven't reached this far.

Unfortunately, they did. The house was empty and the owner was long gone. At least we could use it. We would have a warm bed, a fireplace and roof above our heads. It was better than a tent.

In that moment, the rain chose to fall. It also started thundering after a while. We were lucky to find this house.

We explored the house quickly before we went ot bed. I just ate a small sandwich before going to bed. We would explore the house again tomorrow. We will also look for useful things tomorrow, and pack, and talk about this. All of this, that is happening. Right now we needed sleep. And we had lots of time, it was going to rain a long time and we couldn't walk in the rain.

I thought about our future as I drifted off to sleep. I fell asleep pretty quickly and darkness welcomed me with a dreamless sleep.
