Caelie's POV
"Did you notice that just now?" I asked her, surprised that she hadn't seen the decorations earlier.
"The lights were never turned on, I never saw them," She shrugged, continuing to stuff a rectangular box of crackers into a basket.
Oh, right. I never did turn on the lights. I was too busy being busy. I let a sound that was something between a groan and a squeal, I don't know why."
"What the hell was that?" Avery jumped away from me, her American accent slipping a bit. I squinted my eyes at her, making sure that she kept that accent.
"I don't know. Have you checked on Niall to see if he kept his side of the bet?" I asked her while jumping up onto the counter and grabbing an apple from the nearby fruit bowl. I remember when I was little, I almost cut my finger off trying to cut the skin off of an apple, so I never peeled an apple ever again. It seems pretty silly, but I'm traumatized for life.
Her eyebrows furrowed together as she tried to remember if she had contacted him.
"Now that I think about it, no," She stated after a couple of seconds. "I should do that, though..."
She gently threw the box of cookies she was holding onto the counter, and walked off to the living room. I stared at the doorway she just passed through. Wow, she really just did that. The cookies were the last thing to put away...
I rolled my eyes before placing the cookies where they belong and throwing away my finished apple core in the garbage. Wiping my hands on my sweats to get rid of any apple juice that might remain, I followed in Avery's steps to the living room. She was sitting on the couch with her phone in her hands. Her fingers were tapping the screen rapidly, texting someone from what I could see.
"YO. AVERY."
She looked up from her phone screen for a split second before going back to her phone.
"What?" She absent-mindedly asked, putting about 75% of her attention into whatever she was doing.
"What are you doing?"
"Texting... Harry... to see if... Niall kept...bet." She murmured, barely audible, while typing on her phone. "And, send."
I raised an eyebrow at her as she dropped her phone onto the couch and sat criss-cross apple sauce (A/N: is there a proper term for that position idk) with a little smile on her face.
"Why are you smiling?"
"Uh... because I want to?" She confusedly answered.
"Yeah, but what are you smiling at?"
"What's there to not smile at?" Well, a number of things.
"Poverty, abuse, starvation, racism... the list could go on, Avery." I crossed my arms. Why can't this girl just tell me why she's smiling? It's not that hard of a question to answer. In most situations, at least.
"Yeah, those things aren't smile-worthy, but... think about the good things in the world. The anonymous acts of kindness, the way the air smells after it rains, the sound of water as it rushes down a waterfall or the way it splashes around in a river. Those are the things that make living worth it. Life is good. Life is... awesome."
I was pretty awestruck by what she said. This deep side of Avery is not something that I see every day. But the more I thought about it, life was amazing. It's too bad that the bad things in the world overshadow the good, though. I guess that that's life. Completely and utterly unfair, but beautiful nontheless. Damn it, Avery's deepness rubbed off on me. Go away.
