Caelie's POV
"Well, at least French class is interesting," Avery shrugged as we made our way through the crowded hallway. French is a really hard language to learn, but it's always been a dream of mine to be able to speak it fluently; I'm not giving up on that dream.
"Yeah, much more interesting than psychology. This is basically the only subject I'm willing to learn," I replied as I tried to avoid bumping into people who were hurrying by. Avery and I were pretty short. Pretty much everyone else in this campus is either a few inches taller than us or around six feet tall. You didn't really see a person shorter than us around here. We're unique. (Cue the dramatic hair flip.)
"But it'd be cool if you were really good at psychology. Like, you could tell what someone was feeling or thinking just by their actions? That's pretty bad-ass, in my opinion. A mind reader, sort-of-ish. Imagine. Being able to tell what people were thinking."
She had this expression on her face that told me she was thinking really hard about something, so I didn't even bother to answer her. I just rolled my eyes and continued to pull her along toward the café. It's really warm and comfortable there.
"Avery?" I snapped my fingers in her face.
"Yeah? What?"
Goodness. "Nothing. Nothing."
"What? No! You can't say that you're going to tell me something, then say 'never mind.' Don't leave me hanging!" She stopped walking when we entered the cafeteria hall, and pulled me aside to stand next to her by a large, blue pillar.
I've always hated when people say "I know a secret" or something, then say "I can't tell you" right after. I mean, I get it, it's a secret, it's not your place to tell me, but did you really have to say that you knew something that I didn't? You got me all excited for no reason.
I do that too, sometimes, but I am sort of a hypocrite. I know it's not the best trait to have, but I can't help it. Well, I can help it, but, you know.
"It's really nothing. You just zoned out, and I wanted to get your attention. Is that a crime?" I turned the tables on her.
She rolled her eyes and mumbled, "No."
"Then don't bother me about it anymore."
"Sorry, Mother," she said in a mocking tone. Well, excuuuse me.
"Whatever," I said, continuing our path across the big-ass campus.
Like, seriously, I would have bought a bicycle or something along with a car so that I didn't have to walk this far several times a week. I already have enough exercise everyday, what with the three-hour volleyball practices I have after school. Plus our games almost every weekend. God, that two-week break for winter was not enough.
"Damn, did it really have to be hot today? The one time that our class is in a whole other building across the freaking university, it's hot outside. It's London! It's not supposed to be hot! It's supposed to be cloudy! And dreary! And dark! Especially in the morning! Urgh!" Avery ranted next to me.
I placed my free hand on her left shoulder. "Calm down, Avery, God. It's not that hot."
She made some sort of choking noise that was somewhere between a groan and a tsk, then stared at me in disbelief. "Not that hot? Not that hot? Caelie, it's, like, 75 degrees out. And maybe it's because I'm wearing dark jeans and a very thick sweater and not shorts and a t-shirt, but still, it's really hot."
It was my turn to stare at her in disbelief. "Yeah, maybe it's because of your dark jeans and sweater. Just maybe," I said in a sarcastic tone that caused her to mock me without saying anything.
You know that face that some people do when the person they hate says something stupid, then turns around, and you want to mock them without them hearing? Yeah, she did that.
"Whatever, Caelie," she rolled her eyes at me and entered the large building.
Well then.
