I didn't know what was chewing on my shoe. But whatever it was, it had some teeth. I was so exhausted from hacking up cinnamon that all I could do was lie there. I could hear Eva panicking as the little thing dragged me away. That's when my backup generator seemed to turn on.
It wasn't much, but I managed a few kicks, which seemed to do the trick. I didn't feel the needle teeth in my toes anymore. That was good. But was still too exhausted to stand up. I then heard a door open.
I was pulled upright and I was carried like that through the doorway. I then felt a sharp pain in my heel. The only thing my tired body could do was scream in pain. Eva jumped about ten thousand feet in the air and dropped my virtually lifeless body. Then she used my caramel-hardened jacket as a weapon and she beat the sugar out of whatever that little thing was. I was glad for that.
I heard a door slam shut behind me. I was then pulled upright again.
"I am super sorry about that, Alex, the stupid little..." she must have kept talking, but I didn't hear any of it. I blacked out until I felt cold water on my face. I threw my head backwards with so much force that I fell on my butt. "Well, at least you are awake now."
"How long was I out?"
I kind of expected her to say a few days or weeks. You know, like in the movies. But no. I got "About five minutes."
I was kind of disappointed. It would have been a lot cooler if I had been out for a few days because then I would have missed school and I would have regained my lost sleep. But no. Such is life.
I stood up, my legs still wobbly. I had to use Eva for support. I managed to stand but once I saw my face, it took all of my will power to not faint again.
The wet stuff I mentioned earlier that was running down my face? It was blood. It looked like two wet torrents of red coming out of my nose. It was horrifying. My face had small scratches all over from the cinnamon particles. I had lots of little rust colored freckles of where the cinnamon congregated on my face.
To sum it up, I looked like a snicker doodle gone wrong.
I then heard a noise in the kitchen, which was across the hall from the bathroom we were in. The look on Eva's face said that there wasn't supposed to be anyone else in the house. Not good. Her mom didn't know that we were here. Julia didn't either but she doesn't mind a visit without notice in advance. Julia says that before anyone visits, her mom will whirlwind the house until it's spotless.
We closed the bathroom door and hoped that whoever was in the kitchen to go upstairs.
Eva decided to hide in the bath tub while I held the door closed. She had a roll of toilet paper as her weapon and I had a toilet plunger. We were being as silent as mice. We then heard someone knock.
Eva and I exchanged glances. We needed something fast.
