The car sped past lots of buildings as we drove in the direction of the Candy Shoppe. In the bathroom, I'd had a revelation while I was washing the blood and spices off my face. I just hoped what I was looking for would still be there.
Julia pulled up on the curb just in front of the store. I looked out of the window and as soon as my eyes landed on the shop, my heart plummeted. The door was boarded shut.
I couldn't believe it. I got out of the car before it even stopped and ran to the used-to-be entrance. It had a note on it that made my heart swim deeper into the pit of my gut.
Condemned
That wasn't fair! Everyone new better than to go into the Shoppe. They knew that it was unsafe. Then a wave of realization threatened to topple me. If someone goes in there and nothing happens...
This car ride just took a turn for the worst. How many people had gone in there to condemn it? I then heard a scream behind me. As soon as I showed signs of alertness, I felt something bite my foot. I screamed and stamped my foot. I heard the distinct scream of Eva, (it sounds like a dying cat and toddler fusion) and the sound of Julia panicking(she's Hispanic, so I think you can picture it).
I felt another two somethings fall on my head, one of which clawed onto my scalp with tiny little talons and the other one fell onto one of my shoulders and dung it's claws into my arm as it fell. It drew blood, but at this point I was used to it.
I whacked the thing out of my hair and it landed with a crack! I smacked the other something off of my arm and kicked the last onto the ground. I stepped back to see what they were.
They looked like white tablets with a red pinwheel on it. In other words, they were Peppermints. The one I knocked off of my arm somehow got itself upright and it rolled to the one I had smacked out of my hair, then the other one followed. That one was shattered. It had a crack down the middle. I leaned a little closer and I saw the one from my head with a whole spiderweb of cracks with some pieces missing. The other two Peppermints just sat there. Silently. Staring at their buddy.
It was heartrending. That's when I realized that this candy had other emotions other than bloodlust. Then of the little things let out an ear-piercing shriek. I plugged my ears as soon as I could, but I could hear them ringing as I closed my eyes and screamed in pain. When I opened my eyes, I was greeted by a small thing.
It looked like a tic tac. It was the smallest of all the candy so far. It fell sideways and rolled my direction. It stopped at my feet, rolled back a little as if sizing me up, then seemed to pick up a shard of dead Peppermint. Then it came back to my foot. And stabbed it.
I should have been expecting it. I then saw hordes coming towards us. I didn't see much, though, because I was trying to step on the little tic tac. I then felt one get on my shoulder and another swim up my leggings. I must have looked like I was Bruce Lee with all of my jerky, kicking movements. Two more tic tacs got a hold of me when I felt millions of sharp objects fly into me, some drawing blood.
Is this it, I asked myself. But no, it wasn't. The worse was yet to come.
