The patch of skin was completely cooked. It was blistered and pus was visibly oozing out of the wound. It also smelled like a barbecue gone wrong. It brought tears to Layla's eyes. Seeing that made my eyes want to well up as well. But that wouldn't help Layla very much, now would it?
She needed something cold on her shoulder, but there was nothing anywhere that was useful. I told Julia to go find something metal, because metal would most likely be cold. As she went to got find that, I sat with Layla. Eva started to get out of the car, but I told her to stay inside of it. Just as I was finishing my sentence, a big glob of brown stuff embedded itself on the roof of Julia's car.
I tried to move Layla under a store's awning to keep her out of the way of the hot stuff. A glop of it fell a few inches from my foot. It looked like thick syrup. Like, what goes on a sundae. After it stopped steaming so much, I dipped my finger in it and tasted it. It was hot fudge. No wonder it burned Layla.
I waited with Layla for Julia to return. The fudge was now falling a more rapid pace. Soon it was coating most of the sidewalk. In times like this, I wonder where the heck Julia is.
Then, out of nowhere, I hear a clank! Out of an alleyway ran Julia with a tin can meant for tomato soup. She ran in our direction and slid on her knees. She pressed the tin can into Layla's shoulder and a wave or relief passed over her face. I started looking for something cold to put in the can. Metal is a good conductor of heat. Something told me that this can wasn't going to stay cold for long.
I asked for the cup and went to the pierced radiator. I tried to get some of the cooled liquid into the can. It was fairly hard but I did it. I ran back to Layla and set the can on her shoulder.
"Thanks guys," Layla murmured. It was nice to see her recovering. On the other hand, she wasn't able to push the busted car anymore. Now she had to be the one to steer. Which presented a task for us to face. How were we going to get Layla into the car without getting ourselves burnt? But there was also a more important question that was currently hanging over our heads.
How were we supposed to push this busted car with lava hot fudge falling from the sky?
