LAUREN'S POV

When I woke up, Y/N and I were in the same exact position as when I fell asleep. Not that I really expected anything different.

The noise the nurse was making is what woke me up. It seemed to be a new one and it was as if she didn't care that we were sleeping at all. When she finished I glared at her retreating back.

I looked up at Y/N to see the color returning to her face and even though it's only been a night, she looks a lot healthier and well rested. I smiled and pecked her cheek before heading into the bathroom to do my business. I looked at myself in the mirror once I finished washing my hands. The restlessness on my face was evident, my constant waking up and worrying about if Y/N woke up.

Commotion outside of the hospital room caught my attention and peaked my interest. When I got out of the bathroom, I recognized the muffled voice of JoAnn, Y/N's mom, arguing with someone else. "That's my daughter! I don't care!"

She kept shouting and eventually the door opened and the small woman emerged. Once she got a good look of her daughter, she raised a hand to her mouth and her eyes immediately began to water.

The nurse that I'm guessing was arguing with her stood in the doorway dumbfounded. She ended up just turning around and leaving. JoAnn slowly walked to the side of Y/N's bed and grabbed one of her hands. She started softly crying as she looked at the state of her daughter.

"It's all my fault." She whispered. My heart constricted at the sight so I went behind JoAnn to rub her back. She kept blaming herself and it was so heartbreaking to see.

"It's not your fault, it's Greg's." I whispered. "And he's in prison now, he can't hurt her anymore. I know Y/N and I know she doesn't blame you for any of this. She may be mad but I know deep down she's just happy to have her mother back."

JoAnn didn't answer, instead she just lifted her other hand that wasn't occupied and placed it over mine that now rested on her shoulder. We sat in silence for a couple minutes until JoAnn spoke up. "You know I'm really glad that she has you, Lauren. You're so good to her."

I smiled in appreciation. I was feeling really proud of myself actually since I basically just got her blessing. She patted my hand a couple times before retiring her attention back to Y/N. There was no real change in the steady breathing or heart rate that the monitor rang out.

JoAnn and I sat there for another couple of minutes before she stood up. "I'm going to talk to the doctor for a little bit then get something to eat. Do you want anything?" JoAnn asked nicely.

I shook my head slightly with a small smile on my face. "I'm good, thank you though." JoAnn nodded her head and left the hospital room.

I sighed and sat back down oh Y/N's bed, looking intently at her face as I raised my hand to place it on her cheek. The skin was starting to regain its heat but it wasn't normal yet.

I rubbed the skin of her cheek with my thumb. "Please wake up, Y/N." I whispered.

Not that I was expecting one, but when I got no response and there was just nothing, I sighed again and lowered my head to kiss her forehead.

I smoothed out the hair from her face before standing up and turning the TV on. Another set of nurses came in to change her bandages and they were looking better each time. There was less and less blood but the wounds were still pretty bad. They closed up by now and were scabbed over, but they were still large in size and all discolored.
