Twitter probably shut vine down because of Damn Daniel tbh

"Need help?" Gilbert hugged my back, getting up on his tiptoes to rest his head on my shoulder while I cooked.
"No thank you, Gil." I slouched a little so I could get him that much closer.
"I have something for you."
"I told you not to get me anything." I stirred the spaghetti noodles with fierce determination.
"I had to." He kissed my neck, pulling me away from the stove.
"I need to keep stirring the pot..."
Gilbert laughed and let go of me. "Ich liebe dich."
I felt my face burn hot, as if his words were made of sunlight.
"That means..."
"I love jou."
"Yeah."
He didn't ask for me to return the words. He just kissed me on the cheek and sat down at the table. I went back to cooking in silence.
When I finished setting the meal down on the table, Gilbert pulled me into his lap. I wasn't sure what to do so I just settled down into his warm, sturdy thighs.
"So what did you get me?"
"It's in mein pocket."
"I'm not moving."
"I don't really vant you to." Gilbert wrapped his arms around my waist and buried his head in my back.
"Happy Birthday, Mattie." He sighed happily.
"Happy birthday to you too."
"Vhat?"
"Whoops." I wasn't the most socially together person. At least Gil knew this by now.
"Hey, supper's gonna get cold."
"Want me to get up?"
"Only if jou don't vant to eat cold spaghetti."
"Cold spaghetti is awful."
"True."
He let go of me so I could get into my own chair. We ate in silence and Gilbert cleaned up the dishes while I curled up in our bed.
"Now for jour gift!"
"You didn't have to." I reminded him.
"But I did."
"Fine. What is it?"
"Here." Gilbert reached into his pocket and sat next to me. "Close your eyes."
I followed his directions, feeling his burning hot arms slide around my shoulders. Something light dropped around my neck before he pressed a kiss to my mouth.
"Happy birthday, liebe."
I opened my eyes and reached toward my collarbone, feeling a smooth piece of metal. I managed to twist my neck enough to see the maple leaf shaped locket.
"Where'd you find this?"
"It's Canada. Zhis shit is everyvhere."
I nodded in agreement. "Was it expensive?"
"Zhat doesn't matter."
Of course it did. But I didn't want to start a fight.
"Thank you." I hugged Gilbert. He pulled me down so I was lying across his muscular body. I let my head fall onto his chest, hearing his heart pounding in my ears like a hangover, except pleasant.
"Are jou happy, Mattie?"
I hesitated to answer. Was I happy?
I had been depressed for so long that I couldn't remember what happiness felt like anymore.
Hadn't it been much more clear?
But I wasn't sad, at least.
Was that what happiness was?
"Yes." I said. I wasn't sure if it was true or not.
But I really hoped it was.
