“Listen, this transmission is in case anything happens to me or the members of my team. We are in Zone 4. The Dracs are closing in, and my team and I don’t have much time. I’m Massacre Maze. But you can just call me Maze. As you may know, these are tough times. Better Living Industries has basically taken control of life as we know it. That’s why we, the Killjoys, the rebels, must fight for our freedom. We can’t let them take away who we are, or how we feel. Don’t lose yourselves out there. Remember: the only reason they’re fighting us is because they are afraid. And they should be. So keep on your toes, keep your gun close, and die with your mask on if you’ve got to. And never stop running. This is Massacre Maze signing off.” I switched off my transmitter and took a deep breath in as I turned to my team.
By ‘team’, I mean the three teenage boys who have become my recent family. I gave them what I hoped was a look of confidence and defiance, and threw in a wild grin. I really didn’t want them to know how absolutely terrified I was. Fifteen year old Fire Star returned my look. Seventeen year old Switchblade nodded. Fourteen year old Flash Thief tried to look tough and nonchalant.
Flash Thief was the most recent recruit to our team/family. We found him half dead in Zone 3 about two weeks ago. He had been attacked by five or six Dracs, and halfway through the fight, his gun died. He had barely escaped with his life. We nursed him back to health and he decided to stay with us.
“Let’s go,” I spoke, pulling up my black bandana to cover most of my face. I brought my ray gun out from my belt.
“Who died and made you leader?” Switchblade asked.
Fire Star rose an eyebrow. “Do you have a better plan, Switch?”
Switch’s face became serious, and he said defensively, “No. I was just wondering why a thirteen year old little girl just became the leader of us, when we are all older than her. And plus, we’re men.”
“Guys, just cut it out. No one’s the leader, right, Massacre?” Flash Thief glanced over at me nervously.
“Right,” I answered, “It was just a suggestion, Switch. Here, if you want, we can do what you want to. So, what’s the plan?” I asked him.
“Just drop it. I’m in a bad mood. Sorry,” Switchblade apologizes.
Fire Star patted him on the back. “It’s alright, man.”
I tensed and brought my ray gun up. “We got company. Ten Dracs from the looks of it.” Ten figures came up on the horizon about five hundred meters or so away from us. They were walking. Just freaking walking like they didn’t have a care in the world!
Everyone raised their guns. “Uh..Make that nine Dracs and an Exterminator!” Thief breathed. My mind swarmed with thoughts. We could take on the Dracs…But the Exterminator? We couldn’t win this fight.
“You guys. Go. Run. Now. To the empty motel we slept in last night,” I ordered.
Switchblade stood his ground. “No way. We’re not gonna let you get yourself killed.”
I shot my don’t-you-argue-with-me-or-you’re-dead look at Switch. “Move your ass now. Go.”
“If you die, I’m gonna kill you,” Switch threatened.
“Just go you idiot! NOW!” I pushed Switch after Thief and Fire Star. He sprinted away to follow them. I took aim at the Dracs and fired. I shot one of them in the chest, and he collapsed immediately. I shot another in the stomach, and then the leg. He went down, too. The third Drac was hit in both of his shoulders. He stumbled, but did not go down.
By this time, they all had drawn their guns. I knew that I didn’t stand a chance. Hell, I was going to die. But I wasn’t going down without a fight. Everyone knew that Dracs couldn’t aim for crap, but the Exterminator was in a whole different league. As soon as he brought his gun up, I dashed to the right to avoid the shot that would’ve killed me had I moved half a second later.
I turned tail and ran, keeping my head turned over my shoulder. I didn’t have to watch where I was going because there was nothing to run into. The Exterminator and Dracs kept firing at me. I occasionally dodged shots. They were still fucking walking like they just knew that I was gonna die. But, then again, it’s their fault if they don’t run after their targets. I thanked God for that. I reached the seemingly empty town we had been staying in and ducked behind a shop.
“Spread out!” the Exterminator yelled, “Find her, then kill her friends!” Oh, no way in HELL were they going to kill the guys. A Drac turned around the corner where I was hiding. I immediately shot him in the heart. I winced, knowing that I had killed yet another living being that day, but I knew that I had no time to spare for sympathy. I dragged the Drac’s body behind the shop a bit more so that he wouldn’t be spotted so easily.
So far, I had killed three out of nine Dracs. That meant that there were six Dracs and one Exterminator left. Seven enemies. I was right about to turn around the corner of the shop and start firing at everything in sight when I heard a voice say, “We’re not gonna just sit and watch you die.”
I whipped around to see Switch, Fire, and Thief. I nodded solemnly. “Let’s do this, guys.” All four of us turned around the corner and started firing at everything in unison. The Exterminator was nowhere in sight, but there were four Dracs. It was as if my team were one person. The four Dracs fell down to the ground, dead. I heard a crunching sound behind us and hissed quietly, “THIEF!”
Thief turned and shot down the Drac. “What does that leave us with?!” he breathed.
“One Drac and the Exterminator,” Fire Star answered.
Switchblade nodded. “Alright, guys, spread out and find them. Fire Star, go with Maze. I’ll go with Thief. Don’t do anything too stupid,” he added, with a glance in my direction.
I grinned sheepishly and we spread out. Thirty seconds later, we heard the sound of shots and what sounded like a car. “Switchblade! NO!” Thief’s voice cried. Then something that sounded like strangled sobs. We started running towards the sound of the sobs. A shot was made, and the sobs ended. I tried to choke back tears.
“Switch…Thief…” Fire Star whispered. We bowed our heads. I felt a few tears start to roll down my face.
I tried to be strong for Fire Star, but I couldn’t hold it in. Fire Star gave me a look of fear. I was confused, until he shot behind me. I turned and saw a Drac on the ground, dead. “Thanks…” I half spoke, half sobbed.
Fire Star looked furious. “Fire Star, NO!” I yelled as he ran out into the open.
“You. Fucking. BASTARD!” Fire Star yelled. “I’m gonna KILL YOU!”
I decided to sneak around and catch the Exterminator by surprise from behind. I heard shots ringing out, and I ran as fast as I could. I ran along the side of an old store and found a car. A Chrysler. I hopped in. It was still running. Switchblade had burned the basics of driving a car into my brain. I changed the gear and drove forward. I prayed that I wouldn’t crash. I turned around the corner and saw that the Exterminator was still engaged with Fire Star. I sped forward. This mother fucker was about to be mowed down. Then Fire Star screamed and fell to the ground.
