."It's probably from all processed foods."

"Told you to get hat checked out last year."

"What a shame, so much potential wasted."

"Should have gone to church more often, maybe you wouldn't been in this boat if you had."

"What a waste."

Dan couldn't believe his ears. People who he had thought would care couldn't have given two shits.

People's reactions were all pinning it all onto him like he had any control over the mass of cells growing in his head.

After his grandmother telling his that he should have gone to more church, he returned home.

Nobody seemed to care that he was dying. So why should he?

He finally reached the door to his apartment, leaning against it as he fumbled with the keys.
"Hey Dan." He heard, turning to face the door across the hall.

"Hey Kyle." He said, plastering a fake smile on his face. He hoped that Kyle couldn't read him like he always claimed. The two had best friends since they could talk.

"What's the matter?" He asked.

"I'm um dying." Dan choked, feeling as his eyes began to water.

"Last week they diagnosed me with malignant tumor cells in my brain."

Dan watched as Kyle's even demeanor turned sad. His face falling.

"Oh my god."

He then looked at Dan like he was fragile and breakable. Like he was going to lose him.

"I'm sorry." Dan cried, all of his emotions from the day letting loose. He could feel as he slowly lost his composure, falling apart right in front of his friend.

"Don't be sorry." Kyle said, motioning for him to come inside his apartment.

And Dan did. He walked into his best friend's house, and flopped onto the sofa.

"I'll make you some cookies. Just relax okay?" Kyle said, trying hold back the tears that were beginning to fall. He tried holding them in, but when he thought about they just fell faster.

The boy who he had grown up with wouldn't be there to grown old with. The boy who had taught him how to read wouldn't even be there to speak at his wedding. And most importantly his best friend wouldn't ever get to know of his crush that has always been there.

When the cookies were ready, he brought them over to the sofa. But Dan was fast asleep, fresh tear stains streaking his cheeks.

So he laid a blanket over him, and turned off the lights.
