Kyle quietly slipped out of the dark room, trying his hardest to not wake up his sleeping beauty.
He hated to leave Dan, but it had to be done.
The suburban neighborhood came into view and suddenly he was hit with a wave of nostalgia. It was the same neighborhood he had met Dan in. It was the neighborhood where they spent the days riding their bicycles, and chasing the ice cream truck.
It was a time when their biggest problem was when it rained and they had to stay inside.
A small smile crept its way onto Kyle's face as he thought about the good old days.
He then pulled up to the Smith's home, the medium sized home radiating warmth.
Within minutes he was sat down in the living room, sipping on a cup of warm tea. Mrs. Smith was sat in front of him, waiting for him to speak first.
"Hey Mrs. Smith I uh wanted to talk about Dan." Kyle started, suddenly nervous.
"Is it because he came out to us? Because I agree I way overreacted, both me and Rod have come to terms with it."
Kyle's mouth fell open. Dan had told him of how horrible she was when he came out. How she pulled out Adam and Eve just like most old school parents.
"Really?"
She nodded her head softly, setting a hand on his. He felt the same as the day his own mother scolded him for hours, and he eventually found the motherly comfort in Mrs. Smith. She made him a meal of Mac and cheese and let him spend the night, despite the fact that Dan was at his uncle's.
"Of course honey. I just want the both of you happy." She grinned at him, making him crack a small smile.
"Kyle, sweetie what's on your mind?" It was like she could read his mind. Of course his thoughts were occupied by the inevitable.
"Nothing really."
But he knew that wasn't an acceptable answer, and wether or not she would somehow coax it out of him.
"I think you forgot who you're talking to. What's the matter?" And that's when the tears began flowing. Kyle silently took his head in his hands. He didn't want to show how weak he really was.
"It's Dan. He's getting worse, and it's just I know there's nothing we can do, but still. I feel so helpless. I don't want to lose him. He's my everything."
Mrs. Smith got up out of her chair and sat next to Kyle on the sofa. She softly wrapped her arms around him, and let him rest his head on her shoulder, just like the good old days.
"Look at me." She softly said, and he gently lifted his head, showing her his tear stained cheeks.
"This is wrong of me to say, but honey he's just another brain on the campus, just one fish in a sea of millions." Her eyes too were watery.
"No he's not. Your son is my entire life. He's my boyfriend but he's also my best friend. I've never felt this way about anyone."

Dan lays in bed, the other side of it empty. He tries getting up, but his legs don't seem to be cooperating.
Dan then feels as his body feels as if it's shutting down. He gasps for air, but none is taken in. He's starting to cry, realizing that these could be his final moments. These could be his last minutes on Earth and he's completely alone.
Alone and scared are all he's feeling.
He gasps again, but nothing. His head is starting to get light, the room beginning to spin. The tumor in his head seems to be throbbing, the thumps ringing through his entire body.
This is it
That's all that goes through his head as he watches the room go dark.
