New York - 1915

The orphanage shuddered on a small hill, craving for the sun's warmth to heat its weary walls. However, grey clouds that promised rain cast a shadow against the structure instead. Soon it would be swallowed by the oncoming darkness. Inside lived twelve children, eleven now that Credence had been adopted. He had come back though, as he so often did, to escape his new mother, Mary Lou.

There he sat, in the corner of his old, dust covered bedroom that was still infested by spiders despite how many he had killed whilst there. His hair was as black as a Raven's feathers, and it hung over his pallid face like black ink running down a piece of tilted parchment. His arms hugged around skinny legs, head resting on his knees as he whimpered. He was so distraught that he barely noticed the creak of a door opening on the other side of the room.

"Credence?" Came a familiar, soft voice that instantly drew his reddened eyes upward. "Did she hurt you again?"

A small, cowering nod was all he could manage as he shuffled even further into the corner. Aurelia's eyes drooped sadly at the boy, hand quickly pushing the door shut before stepping a little closer. Credence flinched.

Aurelia halted, hands rising up to show that she had nothing to hurt him with. It was a ritual now, and even though Credence knew she'd never harm him, paranoia had set in. "See? I'm not going to hurt you..." The small girl whispered. "Can I come over there?"

Credence's deep brown eyes stared at her, as silent as the horizon at dusk. He was thinking about it, but the answer was always the same. Another nod, and Aurelia was slowly walking over to him. His gaze stayed on her, wide and never blinking in fear that she'd suddenly disappear. That she'd suddenly become his 'mother'.

The closer she got, the harder it was to not scream at her to leave, but once she had knelt at eye level in front of him he felt himself calm a little. Her blonde hair dangled over her face, but beneath that were eyes of the lightest blue; the color that comforted him so. Her pale hand reached out to him, inching so carefully that her fingers began to shake. He flinched again, and she stopped. Then his brown eyes would open back up to her, and she'd continue.

Soon, her palm brushed against his cheek so gently it were as if he might shatter if she pressed too hard. With this touch, he broke. Credence's head leaned into the feeling, face scrunching up and lips quivering over clenched teeth. Tears burst forth, spilling down his face like a flooded river. The muscles of his chin trembled, his mind letting go of caution and turning to static; overwhelmed by the constant fear and stress he lived with. He could feel a painful stab numbing his whole body, but he kept it down. He had to hide it, to keep it under control.
