Chapter 4.

That night the sound of screeching tires awoke me up and I sat up in my bed. I know I was an early riser but it was pitch black outside. Glancing at my alarm clock, the red 11:03 gave little light in my room. I get out of my bed and head towards my closest, already wearing yoga pants and a black tank top, I grab my black leather jacket and put on my black Nikes. I reach for my phone and text Chris and Will, telling them that the boys were out tonight. It was the 5th time this month.

My black sports car blended in with the watchers of the races. Will sat in the passenger seat observing other cars whereas Chris in the backseat was looking at the women's outfits. Rolling my eyes, I see Uriah pop the hood off a red Dodge Viper SRT-10, looking at the engine. Lynn stood next to him, showing him adjustments she must have made to the car. He nods and puts the hood down.

Zeke and Four are tinkering with the engine in the car besides them. Four owned a beautiful silver Lykan HyperSport car which practically made me drool. Shaking my head, I strain my head trying to see more of their actions. Zeke wipes sweat from around his neck with a rag and clapped Four on the back. Four and Uriah handed Zeke one grand each to enter the race. Lynn made her over beside Zeke. Four and Uriah started their cars and drove to the start line. Shauna comes out of nowhere and walks out front.

"Okay," she says, silencing the crowd. "The game is simple. A mile, first back is winner. Winner takes the cash."

"Ready." Shauna puts her arms out.

"Set." She puts her arms vertically.

"Go!"

The cars drive off. I smile. Illegal car races never got old.

Four makes his way over the finish line first with Uriah hot on his tale. They stop their cars and make their way to Zeke. Four and Uriah shake hands. Both grinning like idiots. Zeke hands the cash over to Four. He puts it in his back pocket. Shauna makes her way over to the group and they talk for a couple of minutes. Will grabs his walkie talkie and hears talk of cops nearby. I start the engine and drive off, while hearing others shout, "Guys! Cops! Get outta here!"

I quickly drive Will and Chris home and back to mine. Parking it quickly and silently running up to my bedroom, closing my bedroom door, I hear the boys opening the front door. I shrug off my shoes and jacket and practically jump into my bed, closing my eyes. Trying to even my breaths. I hear quiet footsteps up the wooden steps and they make their way to my bedroom. Zeke opens the door and walks over to my bed. He places a kiss to my temple and whispers good night. He retraces his footsteps back to his bedroom. I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding and aloud myself to fall asleep.

I wake up as normal with the sun slowly rising. I grab my journal from underneath my pillow and write down my experience from last night. Four and Uriah have been illegally street racing for two years now and I have been watching them since early last year. I wrote all my experience in the journal, hoping to learn hints and tricks to improve my driving. I have always looked up to the boys and I aspire to race like them. I have bought a beautiful sleek black Boss 302 and have been practicing racing in an old race track twenty minutes away from home. I plan on entering a race soon as ever since I was a little girl I was fascinated with cars. How they worked, the engine, the gears, everything. Sometimes when I used to walk home from school, I would buy a cheap car magazine and read that to keep my mind sane. When I was younger, I thought that I wanted to be a race car driver. But ever since I watched the boys do illegal street racing my mind set to that. It fulfilled all my needs, adrenaline, courageous, daunting activity which was fun. A little downside of losing a bag full of money but as Hana always say, you win some, you lose some. I close my journal and put it under my pillow. Now school.

Its lunch time and I can finally have a proper conversation with Christina and Will. I told them to meet me in the field so no one could overhear us. I see the two walking out, Christina fusses with his hair and he has his hand gently placed on her lower back. I smile. I think I'm seeing a beginning of a relationship. I shake my head.

"Okay, so I was thinking-"

"Are you ever going to tell Four or Uriah that you watch them?" Chris cuts me off. I shake my head.

"Now that you mention it, I was saying that I want to join street racing. I mean I have a car, I have the skills, I have the money. What else do I need?"

"A brain! You could get killed!"

"But what's the point of life if you don't live a little."

"Do you want your life to abruptly end at seventeen?"

"If it makes you feel better, you can come."

"Of course I'm coming. But I need you to know the consequences."

"I understand, and I love you for looking out for me. But I'm really passionate about it."

"When you start... racing... are you going to tell the boys?"

I shake my head, "No. they would scold me and tell me that I could get killed and all that bullshit."

"It's true though."

"Yet they are doing it, why can't I? I'm not a baby anymore."

"I think Tris should make her own decisions and if this is what she wants, I'll stand by her. I always have and I always will." Will cuts off whatever Christina was about to say. I nod my head in gratitude. The bell rings and we head to our next class.
