“What are they after?” Bonnie asked. I stood up and took the PokeBall out of my pocket.

“This.” I muttered, pointing to it. Aleksei nodded.

“It seems that Team Rocket knows what’s inside that PokeBall, and whatever it is, it may be useful to them.” I slotted the ball back into my pocket and turned to face the scientists.

“Well, whatever they want, they’re not going to get my Pokemon!”

After thanking the Metal Masters for their hard work, we decided on our next move. “Let’s go to Vermilion Gym!” Holly said eagerly. Everybody agreed, hoping for a great battle to see. By the time we eventually made it through Cerulean to Vermilion City, it was night time. “Right, Holly, take the others inside to watch your match, and I’ll wait out here.” I said. Holly nodded, grasping Jake and Bonnie by the arms.

“C’mon guys, you’re going to love this!”

So, my friends entered the Gym whilst I sat on the banks of Vermilion City’s hills. Eventually, I started to feel dreary, so I curled up with my bag under my head and fell asleep. It wasn’t long however, until Holly violently shook me awake. “Toby, I got the Thunder Badge!” She said, thrusting the badge to my nose. “That was fast!” I exclaimed, wiping the sleep from my eyes. Holly frowned.

“I know, he was really weak to be honest.” She muttered. I dropped my bag back onto my shoulders and yawned.

“Really? Oh well, better see for myself.”

The others decided it was high time that they took a nap, so they occupied the bank I had been sitting on. Meanwhile, I entered the Gym of the 'Lightning American'. It was oddly quiet; the electric force-field deactivated by Holly made no sound at all. “Hello?” I called into the poorly lit room. From the back of the room, a burly figure stepped forward.

“Come for a badge?” The man croaked.

“Lt. Surge! I’m here to battle you!” I said confidently. The lieutenant brought out two PokeBalls and threw them into the air.

“Go, Magnezone and Jolteon!” He said, rather feebly. I could tell something was wrong, but I just couldn’t identify the problem.

“Go, Cyndi and Grovyle!” I shouted, launching two PokeBalls into the air. All four Pokemon appeared at once, the Lieutenant’s looking weary. “Cyndi, use Flame Wheel on Magnezone! Grovyle, use Leaf Blade on Jolteon!” I ordered.

Cyndi immersed herself in flames and charged at Magnezone, scoring a Critical Hit right bat! Grovyle then leapt to action, slashing Jolteon with another Critical Hit! Both of the opponent’s Pokemon crashed into the wall, and when the dust settled, I saw the worst thing.

Both Magnezone and Jolteon were knocked out! “What?! Already?” I exclaimed. Lt. Surge let out a deep sigh and walked up to me.

“Just take the Badge.” He said, handing me a Badge of purest yellow. “Now get out.” He said bluntly.

We both returned our Pokemon, and before I exited the room, I turned and asked what was on my mind. “Mister Surge, what’s wrong?”

The electrifying Leader stopped and sighed. “Those thugs stole my Raichu!” He blurted. “Team Rocket stole my partner! E-ever since then, I’ve not been compelled to train!”

I took a moment to let it sink in. I had read somewhere that Lt. Surge had been given a Pichu for his tenth birthday, and it had been his strongest Pokemon ever since. No wonder he was upset! “Sir, I’ll do everything I can to retrieve your Raichu!” I assured. The lieutenant hid his tears and looked up to me.

“You will?” he asked. I patted him on the shoulder and said,

“I promise.”

I left the Gym with a heavy weight on my shoulders, but that was soon pushed to the back of my mind by sleep deprivation. I trudged over to the bank where my friends lay sleeping. Bonnie was curled up with her Tepig, presumably for warmth. Jake was sprawled out at the hills bottom, and Holly was stretched out with her arms behind her head, Riolu curled up on her chest.

I took a leaf from both Bonnie and Holly’s books. I brought Cyndi out for warmth, lay back like Holly, and put her on my chest. “Ah, why can’t everyday be like this?” I thought to myself before drifting off to sleep.
