(Gabi's POV)
Thursday, almost 3 weeks with the Barnetts. Their house will be back together in about two months now. The builders messed up and had to start over on the house, building it from the ground up upon request of the Barnetts. Apparently they're just getting a totally new house now. Joy. Either way, I'll be happy once they are out of my life.Anyways, I'm on my way with Baileigh, who goes with me basically everywhere now, to see Alex. We have received news that he's up now and will be able to return home in 3 days.
Despite me not really loving him, I still must act like his girlfriend until he comes home, then I can break it off.
We walk up to 311 and find Alex laying down, asleep.
I sit beside his bed, noticing a few cards and balloons in his room from his close friends.
"Hey, sleepy" I say to him I'm a light voice. His eyes flicker open and he looks into my eyes and smiles. His face swelling is basically gone."Hello, beautiful." He says in a deep, tired voice. "Gabi, thanks for making sure I was ok and not leaving me." He says.
"No problem. It was the right thing to do."
He smiles at my and his eyes close."Good to see you Baileigh. How are you holding up with the whole Jack thing?" Alex asks her.
"It was more of a shock then hurt, but it's his loss. Plus any guy who just wants to hook up then leave me like that is sick." She responds with a casual eye roll.
"Glad you're ok." He says.
"I'm glad you're ok too." Baileigh responds.
"Gabi, can u lay here with me for a second." He asks, extending his arm.
I nod my head and lay next to him.
"I love you. Like seriously. I already knew I liked you before we met, but now I only love you so much more." He remarks from the heart. My stomach drops and guilt fills my body. I realize how hard this will be for him.
"I love you too." I say instinctively back.
"Hey I should be outa here in a few days and then we are gonna go to court and Jack will be taken care of." Alex assures me.
"Ok. I will defend you." I assure him.
We all talked for a little longer then finally left."How the hell are you gonna let him off easy?" Baileigh asks me in the Uber.
"I honestly don't know. I just don't want him hurt." I say faintly.
"Maybe just stop talking to him. Kinda like fade away from him?" She suggests.
"No," the Uber driver butts in. He looks like he is atleast 40 and has seen some stuff. "That's a terrible idea. I'm sorry to interrupt but if you wanna let him off easy, you gotta be straight up. When he is happy or in a good place, that's when you take him to a coffee shop or where ever you kids can go and sit him down and talk. He will feel better if he hears it in person."
"That's actually a good idea. Thank you." I say to the man.
"No problem, ma'am. You learn a lot about people when you serve four tours."
He says."Oh, thank you for your service, sir." Baileigh says politely.
"My pleasure, little ladies." He says with his southern accent.
The Uber drops us off at my house. We walk in and see Jack, my mom, Kyndel, and his mom standing with arms crossed and a white letter in Jacks hand. Great."Honey, why are the Bravermans pressing charges on Jack here on the grounds of aggravated assault?" My mom asks.
"Here we go. This might take like an hour to explain the full story. And I don't wanna hear Jack butting in until I'm done." I say.
I begin to explain Kyndel's abuse. My mom stands in shock as Baileigh supports everything I say. I then continue onto how Alex and Jack both revealed their crushes on me and how everything just happened. How I ended up with Alex, how Jack used Baileigh, and how they founds and jack got mad and threw peanuts at Alex's face.By the time I'm finished, it's almost dark out. It must've taken an hour and a half to explain everything. My mom and Mrs. Barnett can't move by the time I finish.
"Not my son, not Jack. I never heard he was suspended and he wouldn't do something like that and you know it. How dare you accuse him of something like that! And Kyndel loved you. Why would you say these things?" Mrs. Barnett says defensively. I think she's trying to convince herself these things aren't true.
"If you don't believe me ma'am, you can watch the security tapes in the cafeteria. It saw everything. Or you could call the school and ask." Baileigh says in return.
Mrs. Barnett calls the school and asks about the incident. Tears fall down her pink cheeks as she hears the truth."May I see the security tape?" She asks in a teary voice.
A minute later the call ends. Kyndel and Jack remain silent and watch as the moms, Baileigh and I all watch the audio and video clip from the other day on the computer.
It shows Kyndel clearly bullying me and Jack clearly starting and ending the fight, to my exact description.
Mrs. Barnett breaks down and my mom comforts her."Jack, how could you do this, you're a good kid!" She pleads with her son.
"Mom, he deserved it. I can't explain it but what I did was just, and I will defend myself if I must." He states.
"You're lucky you're not in jail right now! The only reason you aren't is because you aren't gonna run away! You could've killed him!" She yells at Jack. He shrugs his shoulders and walks to his room.
"The letter says he is wanted in criminal court after hearing what the Bravermans had to say." My mom clarifies.
Mrs. Barnett calls the Bravermans and explains the predicament she is in and how she was completely unaware. She also explains how she is gonna defend them and not her son. When she hangs up, Kyndel steps forward."Mom, before you yell at me, I just wanted to say that Jack needs help. I was talking to him in the hallway and he has been saying worse than what you have heard and saw tonight. I'm genuinely worried about him. I think he is a psychopath." Kyndel states.
"I agree with you but that does not mean you will get away with what you've been doing to Gabi. You will be nice to her as long as you remain in this house and at school." She demands.
"Yes ma'am." He says and goes up to his room.
Baileigh left my house and I instantly went to bed. I slept pretty well knowing that the boys will be punished.
