She didn’t text me until Sunday night. The whole time I was practically going insane in worry. But I didn’t call or text, I knew she needed her space. I even took long runs in the woods to occupy myself. Sunday night at 8 o’clock, my phone vibrated on my dresser and I paused my game and practically killed myself tripping over wires as I struggled to get to my phone. I turned on my phone and checked the message.
Alex: 2morrow morning 8 o’clock
Me: Okay thanks.
Alex: Yup
Me: You okay?
Alex: Yup
Me: Okay :-/ sorry
I sat on the bed waiting for a reply, but after fifteen minutes I accepted that she wasn’t going to text me back. I flopped back onto the bed and tried to relax. The whole situation was less than calming. I understood that she had a right to be angry, but she wasn’t thinking about how I was feeling.
She was my mate, and because she grew up with werewolves, human or not, she knew what that meant. I couldn’t stop thinking about her, I couldn’t stop worrying about her, and I seriously didn’t want to. She meant the world to me. Scratch that, she was the world to me. My happiness depends on hers, and as long as she’s hurting, I’ll hurt too. Hopefully she’d realize that before I went insane.
My mom was very understanding about the situation. I explained to her that I imprinted on her that day in the store and she made a point of how she was right about the stars in my eyes. I just shook my head and continued. I told her about how Alex hadn’t turned, and how she was upset that I could feel our bond but she couldn’t. I also admitted that she was mad at me for not telling her sooner.
My mom gave me the best advice I’d ever received: “Just tell her you love her, make a bunch of werewolf kids and be happy.” Genius.
Sunday morning came too slowly. I woke up at 7 and had to sit through the torture and agony of waiting for her to get here. I thought about what I’d say to her.
Should I apologize? Should I act like nothing’s happened? Should I ask her if she likes my sneakers?
She pulled into my yard at 8:02, “cutting it close”.
I got in with a big smile. “Hey Alex!”
She nodded slightly and smiled. She put the car in reverse and began to turn around in the yard.
I sat quietly, hoping she’d say something and break this horrible tension.
She finally did. “It’s okay.”
I looked over at her strangely. “Huh?”
“You apologized last night. I accept your apology.” She turned onto the main road and headed towards the school. “But let’s get a few things straight.”
I gulped. This didn’t sound good.
“Number one, just because we’re mates, doesn’t mean you own me. Number two, if you try and mark me I will slice your hand off, loser.” She smirked and I tried to laugh. Something in her evil smile told me she wasn’t joking. “Number three, and the most important thing, just because we’re mates doesn’t mean you get to be my boyfriend. I don’t care if you’ve stalked me my whole life and know me wonderfully yet indirectly, you don’t know me, and I don’t know you. We can advance when I’m ready.”
