As Alex raced down the road, I contemplated asking her what was happening, but her facial expression shut me up every time I tried.
We pulled up to her house, and from the outside everything looked fine. When we got inside, everything was chaos.
A little girl was running around naked and screaming, and a little boy was chasing after her. I saw the alpha come out of his study and saw the stress in his eyes. Alex ran up to him and hugged him. “What happened?” Her eyes followed the path of her little sister who was now hiding under the table.
She turned from her father, not waiting for an explanation, and crouched down in front of her. “Lily? Come out and come talk to sissy.” She held her hand out and her sister shook her head stubbornly, tears still falling from her tiny little baby eyes.
I was confused. Why didn’t she just go under there and get her. She’s a baby.
Then, Lily started shaking. Before anyone knew what was happening, Lily shifted into a tiny little pup, whimpering and lashing out at Alex sporadically. I rushed over and brought Alex back, away from her. She didn’t try and fight me.
The alpha stood back and watched us, examining the situation.
I bent down and looked into the baby wolf’s eyes. “Hey Lily, do you know what you are?”
Lily whimpered.
“You’re a wolf! Just like your mommy and daddy. Isn’t that cool?”
Lily cocked her head to the side and looked at me funny.
“But ya know, your sister is really worried about you right now, Lily. She wants you to be human again.”
Lily looked up at her sister and back at me.
“Why don’t you just calm down, and you’ll-” Before I could finish, Lily was shifted back into her human baby form again, squealing and crying from the pain of shifting.
Alex cried out in relief and rushed forwards to hug her tightly. They stayed like that for a while, Alex holding her sister, Lily sucking her thumb on Alex’s shoulder.
I backed up into the living room awkwardly.
The alpha was looking at me. “That was very good.”
“What?”
“You got her to shift back. You have talent.”
I think I may have blushed… Just a little. “Thank you.”
He nodded. “She’s a year old.” He sighed. “And Alex is sixteen.” Shaking his head, he walked away.
I knew what he meant though. Lily was only a year old and she already shifted. Alex was already sixteen and she hadn’t shifted. There was either something wrong with his bloodline, or something wrong with his family. Considering Lily and Alex have different mothers, I’d say it was the bloodline. Of course I’d never tell the alpha that because I strongly value my life and all.
Alex came back around the corner with her sister asleep in her arms. Her tears had stopped falling but her eyes were still glassy. “I’m going to put her in bed and I’ll be right back.”
“Okay.” I watched as she walked up the stairs, careful not to jostle the sleeping baby in her arms. She was the picture of nurturing motherhood. It was beautiful.
I waited for her, and a few minutes later she returned, not meeting my eyes.
“Thank you for doing that Ethan.” Her voice was thick with new emotion.
“Of course.” I wanted nothing more than to just hug her. “Do you need anything else?”
“No.” She shook her head then stopped. “Yes. But, I don’t know!” She came forwards and shoved her head in my chest and cried. Somewhere in there I thought I heard, ‘It’s not fair’ and ‘My little sister’.
I hugged her tightly and waited until she stopped crying. She looked up at me and blushed. “I’m sorry, I’m so ugly when I cry.” She wiped tears from her face.
I shook my head and grabbed her wrist to stop her. “You’re always beautiful.”
She rolled her eyes and looked down, blushing again. “Thanks loser.”
I smiled at her. “I love how you always insult me when you’re self conscious. Adorable.”
She giggled. Mission accomplished.
