Alex didn’t answer her phone. Once I was done with my repetitive stalkerish phone calls, I was kinda glad she didn’t. Because if she had, she’d probably hand up. That’s more of a rejection than just not answering.

In the morning, Alex was right on time to pick me up and I was quite slow in making my way outside. She was visibly irritated when I got in the car.

“Hey Alex!”

“Hm.”

Oooh, in girl language I guess that means, I hate you. Why are you talking to me?

I just smiled at her and buckled my seatbelt, secretly praying she didn’t crash into a tree just to spite me. Even though I knew she was mad, and that I should probably tread lightly, I still wasn’t entirely sure why she was mad in the first place. I mean, is it because of me prying into her past relationship? Is it because I called her repeatedly last night at 12 in the morning? Or maybe it could be because I acted like nothing was wrong. I think girls really hate that.

“Why are you mad?” I decided on a straightforward approach.

She shrugged.

Not good. “Guess what?”

She sighed. “What?”

“I have something really, really exciting to tell you!” I willed my butt to stay glued in the seat so that I didn’t bounce all over in excitement.

She waited.

“I may have a cure. Or, trigger, rather.”

She obviously didn’t get it because she looked very uninterested, turning onto the road that led us towards the school.

“Did you not hear me? I may be able to change you!”

“No you can’t.” Her sudden pessimism wasn’t what I was expecting.

“Umm, well. I said I may. What’s with the sudden negative outlook?” I looked at her and noticed the purplish, blue bags under her eyes. She looked extremely tired.

“We’ve tried everything. Nothing’s going to work, Ethan.” She sounded so sure and so set on her own opinion that I just dropped it. Better to talk to her when she was in a better mood.

“Okay Alex.”

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?” My god, I will never understand women.

“Agree with me just to shut me up!” She was truly angry, I could tell. Her hands gripped the steering wheel tightly and her face flushed.

“I’m sorry! Don’t have a stroke!” I put my hands up in defense.

She slammed on the brakes, in the middle of the road. For a spilt second I thought she was going to make me get out of the car, but instead she sat eerily still and quiet, looking straight ahead. Then after 14 terrifying seconds, she pulled over to the side of the road.

I was still braced for some kind of hissy fit, but she just sat there, breathing roughly and slightly shaking.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded slowly. “You aggravate me.”

Well it wasn’t the first time a girl has told me that. “I’m sorry. I just expected you to be more excited.”

She pulled back onto the road and continued the route to school. She was silent the whole way.

Once safely inside the school building, I scanned over the crowd to see if her ex was there. I resolved that I’d find him and talk to him. Not because I was nosy and wanted to kick his ass for hurting her, just because I’m nosy and I wanted to know whether he deserved to get his ass kicked. It took the whole day, but I finally spotted him standing up against some lockers chatting with another guy.

It looked like a light conversation, so I didn’t feel bad coming over and introducing myself.

“Hey, I’m Ethan.” I held out my hand towards him as the other guy was already walking away.

He took my hand and gave it a firm shake. We were off to a good start.

“Evan. What’s up?”

“Oh I’m just new in town and wanted to branch out.” That was a good excuse, right?

He nodded. “Gotcha.”

At that point I wasn’t really sure what to say. Thankfully, he spoke before it got too awkward.

“So I see the country life hasn’t bored you into a coma yet. That’s good.”

I chuckled. “No it’s actually pretty relaxing. Nothing but cows and fields around so there’s not a lot to stress about like in cities.”

He gave me a conspirators look. “Those cows are deadly man.”

I kinda thought he was serious and had “problems”, but then I got that he was joking. “How so?” I joined in on his pretend theory.

“Don’t want to be caught in a field of them beasts at night, trust me. Not good.” His eyes widened and he shook his head.

I laughed painfully at the expression on his face. He grinned and nodded.

“I know. I’m funny.”

I didn’t understand how he could’ve broken Alex’s heart. He seemed really cool.

“I’ll see you later man. Gotta get to class.” I walked off after waving and stopped short when I saw Alex glaring at me from down the hall. I looked back behind me and Evan was already gone, and when I turned back to look at her she was walking away from me, down the hall.

I contemplated going after her, but instead just went to class. From the way she was acting this morning, I don’t think anything I said would be of any help.

A pain rang through my chest as she turned the corner and was out of eye sight. I missed her smile and her laughter. I hated her being angry with me, but what else could I do? If she won’t tell me about her ex I’ll have to find out myself. A man has a right to know who broke his mate’s heart, right?

Something inside told me that I was entirely wrong.
