Chapter 18

Mia's pov
"Mia. Baby slow down" Noodle said grabbing my wrist and stopping me.
"Baby what's wrong?" Noodle
"I.. I can't go out there" I said
"Hey hey I get it. You don't have to go. I'll stay with you. I'll talk to Violet and if it's safe if they find a place. Violet will come back for us and we'll go only then. Okay?" Noodle asked I nodded.
"Hey don't cry it's ok" Noodle said pecking my lips.
"I'm letting everyone down"I said
"No your not they'll understand. I love you, come on let's go talk to Violet" Noodle said
"She was going to the door" I said
"Okay. Calm down" noodle said pulling me into him. We walked to the door, but when we got there I saw another man outside the door who defiantly wasn't here before.
"Who's he?" Noodle asked Pulling me closer to him and further away from the other guy.
"John Collins, rescue and recovery." The man said through the door.
"Did he just say "rescue"?" Zoey asked
"He just said "rescue." Anytime you want to open the door" John Collins said

"How many of there are you?" John Collins asked
"We're down to 8. Look, man, we're all thirsty. We're out of water." Grover said
"Mercury, open all mains at sector 17, over" John said into his radio.
"Why'd they shut it off?" Diesel asked
"They had no choice. They diverted every supply to fight the fires. Now, which one of you got on the radio?" John asked
"That was me. It was my call." Barrett said
"What's your name?" John asked
"Barrett."
" Well, Barrett, you called in the cavalry. I need all your names. Then go get a drink. We leave in five minutes." John said.
Violets pov
"Yeah. Yes, sir. Those are the names. Standing by." John said into his radio
"So what do they think happened at the plant?" I asked
"They're looking into it." John said
" I heard it was a fire in the parking lot." I said
"Not likely. Best guess is is what some kind of industrial accident." John said
"An accident? Then what's in the air? And is our basement full of mutant freaks?" I asked
"A number of people were infected by the toxins in the air." John said
"You still didn't answer the question." I said
"It's because I don't have an answer for you." John said walking away
"Do you they know how many made it?" I asked
"Not yet. Anyone working at Keller Chemical was killed instantly. But we got lucky in places. Some of the valley was able to evacuate." John said
"Wait, so they're not all dead?" Mia asked
"Like I said, there are pockets of survivors, but time is not on our side." John said
"Do you have a list of survivors?" Barrett asked
"It's chaos out there. The best we can hope for is to get you all out of here in one piece." John said
"How are we going to do that?" I asked
"We have a vaccine. You'll be able to breathe the air outside without getting sick." John said
"So we don't need masks?" Zoey asked
"Not to get out of the blast dome." John said
"Then why were you wearing a suit?" Barrett asked
"Because I've been outside in the smoke and ash for more than two days. You won't need what I've been wearing." John said. Johns radio went off so he left to talk to whoever it was.
"Dude, why are you asking so many questions?" Diesel asked
"Don't you want to know?" Barrett asked
"No. He's helping us get out of here." Diesel said
"Listen up. There's been a delay. My men need another half hour to secure a path up here. You got that much time to get your things." John said
"But we're still going, right?" Zoey asked
"You're still going." John said
Zoey's pov
"Who built this?" John asked talking about the radio
"That'd be Barrett." I said
"Impressive." John said
"He's like Einstein. Only richer." I said
"Something you need?" John asked me
"Did you see anyone out there? On your way here? Tall guy, green coat, gas mask?" I asked
"Friend of yours?" John asked
"He went out to look for help and his radio went silent. We haven't heard from him since." I said
"I've learned enough not to make promises, but I'll check for you." John said
"Thank you." I said
Noodles pov
"What's the first thing you're going to do when we get out of here?" Grover asked
"Hmm. If I find my brother, we'd have a beer." Violet said
"I'm gonna hug my mom. Not sure what I'll say after that, but... What about you?" Natalie asked Diesel
"I don't know. Probably look for Lyle's parents, I guess." Diesel said
"You?" Grover asked me
"I'm going to marry Mia" I said smiling.
"You two are so cute" Natalie said
"Where is Mia anyway?"
"She said she had to talk to Barrett about something"
Grover's pov
"20 more minutes in this place." I said
"Longest minutes of my life." Violet said
"Hey, can I tell you something?" I asked
"Tell me." She responded
"You want to know what I did to get into detention?"
"What?"
" Nothing. I came to school to be with you." I said, then I noticed her face
"Oh, no, you're weirded out, aren't you?" I asked
"If you hadn't done that, you could have escaped." She said
"Yeah. Or I might not be alive. Either way, I wouldn't be here right now. With you." I said leaning in and kissing her shortly and softly
"We should get going." I said after we kissed
"Wait. That's all you got?" Violet asked
"I can do better." I said kissing her again.
Mia's pov
"Do you really think John will find it?" I asked Barrett talking about the files on the computer
"That's what he's looking for. We have to delete it. You don't have to be here" Barrett said
"It's ok I trust you" I said. Barrett smiled at me
"Stealing? Can't you afford, like, 1,000 of those?" Natalie said coming into the room.
"A little busy." Barrett said
"What are you doing?" Natalie asked
"It's not important Natalie" I said
"Little busy" means I can't talk." Barrett said
"Are you erasing files? Keller Chemical security?" Natalie asked
"This is not for you." Barrett said
"Oh, my God." Natalie looking at is horrified
"This is not what you think." I said to Natalie
"What am I supposed to think?" Natalie asked
"You can't tell anyone. Natalie, please... I can make it worth your while." Barrett said
"Are you bribing me?" Natalie asked
"More like an incentive." Barrett said
"Go to hell. I'm telling the others." Natalie said
"Natalie" I called after her,but she kept walking.
"We need to go" Barrett said walking out of the room with me following.
