We were driving to the store and each bump in the road seemed magnified since I couldn't see it. Each and every little swerve and turn made me dizzy, and I kept trying to lay my head on the ground but every time I would, the bus would bounce and my head would knock onto the ground. I had a splitting headache, and I wasn't expecting the next bump to come, but as soon as it did, my head slammed into the ground and everything after that happened so fast.
It was like a big blur, and the next thing I knew, I was opening my eyes to see Sean's eyes staring back at me. His lips had just retreated from mine, and his hand was on my cheek.
"What?" I say out loud, rubbing my head and blinking a couple times.
This couldn't be happening. Was that all just a dream? No. . .
"You alright?" Sean's voice sounded real enough to be here, and I took out one of my daggers. "Grace, are you okay?!" He asked as I held the knife to the palm of my hand.
Slowly cutting a shallow gash in my hand, I felt the pain shoot up my hand. This was real. I had been dreaming.
"I'm not blind!" I exclaimed, making Sean worried.
"Um, last time I checked." He said.
I looked up the road and felt the sun glare into my eyes. I had to squint to see the building that we were headed to, and when I did, I was so happy. I could see.
"I'm sorry. I just; I mean; I had a; you see, I thought that when we got in there I was knocked out and then-" I stuttered.
"I think the cold has gotten to you." Sean laughed, wrapping his coat around me.
I nodded, trying my best to wipe away the blood on my hand, and forget about what just happened.
So I'm not blind. It was all a dream. I tried to reassure myself, processing the kiss and my memory of everything. But the Walkers, those are real. And Sean really did kiss me. I thought.
Sean's jacket warmed me up, and I was calming down. My finger's were cold, though, and my toes were going numb. I wanted to hurry up and get these tires so that we could get some place warmer. And safer.
The Walker's moans rung throughout the air, almost like a terrible clash of a million different instruments; all played by monkeys. The air was full of the moans and snarls, and my ears were so used to hearing that awful hiss and groan that sometimes I didn't hear it. I just made room for the spine-chilling noises.
We got to the parking lot of this small car-repairment building and I pulled out my larger knife. Me and Sean took out two Walkers each and then we pushed inside where we found four more, all dressed in worker out-fits.
"Let's split up and then we can find the-" Sean began. But the dream I had when he kissed me earlier flashed my mind, and I decided we shouldn't split up. That's how I got knocked out.
"No," I interrupted, gripping his arm with my free hand.
He looked at me as if I was crazy, but then gave in. "Okay, then we don't split up." He said as we began walking forward.
The only sound in the building was silence, and we roamed around, searching for four tires.
"So what happened that night when you called me crying?" Sean asked curiously as we turned the corner to another aisle.
I shrugged, but decided to tell him. "Me and Norman were at a party after a big Walking Dead interview. He got drunk, along with most of the others. He went to the bathroom, and long story short, he kissed some other girl. She tried to take the blame, but the image of them kissing screamed Norman was subduing her." I explained, gesturing over to a long rack of large tires.
"I hope these'll fit our bus." I said, slipping my knife back into it's sheath and pulling two tires off the rack, and rolling them to Sean.
"But I thought you guys weren't dating?" Sean said in more of a comment form than a question.
I pulled two more tires off and paused. "We weren't. And I later came to my senses and realize that I shouldn't have gotten mad over something that was false. He can't cheat on me unless we're dating." I said.
Sean understood my explanation and we rolled the tires out the door and down the road. Sometimes, they would get away from us and we'd have to chase them down. It was like a game of tag. And that's when I realized something: I would always seem to have more fun with Sean than Norman. Me and Norman took our relationship a bit seriously, but Sean and me's friendship seemed loose and playful.
"Can I tell you something?" I asked just as we walked around the bend and I could spot the blue bus in the distance.
Sean looked over at me, and I almost hit him in the face throwing him his jacket. He laughed and nodded.
"Before those things scratched on the window," I began, feeling how intently Sean was listening, "Let me start over. Did you meet Austin?" I asked. "No, you didn't." I cut Sean off, answering my own question before he could speak. "Sorry." I chuckled. "Well, anyway, before me and Norman got home, me and Austin were on a horse together. Things heated up too fast for comfort, and he kissed me." I said.
"Austin?" Sean clarified.
I nodded. "And the thing was, I didn't want to tell Norman. So I ran off. And ran into a Walker, not knowing it was a Walker." I explained. "But that's not the point. The point is, you can't tell Norman. I just needed to tell someone and get the weight off my chest. It's been killing me." I sighed, squinting up the road.
"I won't." Sean reassured me.
When we got up to the bus, Norman and Sean began fixing all the tires. Luckily, they all fit, and we had no trouble getting them on.
"It's getting late. I'm going to head in for bed." I said yawning.
"Goodnight." Sean was the first to answer and Norman looked up at me from cranking a bolt on. He didn't say anything, but just looked at me like he hadn't seen me in years. I assumed this gesture meant he'd be in in a minute, so I kissed my Auntie Beth goodnight and walked into the bus.
I was on the verge of sleep when Norman, Sean, and my Aunt all walked in and scared me.
Norman walked over to where I was laying, laid behind me, pulled the covers over us, and wrapped his arm around me. I was about to whisper goodnight, but he cut me off by whispering something into my ear so quietly so that I could only hear him.
"Why'd you let Sean kiss you?"
