Ray gurgles and I watch as Ace pushes the blade deeper. Then the pair of them go slack. Ray rolls flat on his back and Ace goes stiff. I watch as Ray's hand searches for the hilt of the knife and tugs, but he gags and yells loudly, leaving the blade lodged in his side.
Then Ace's pale form twitches and he jerks violently, coughing blood and vomit. His eyes roll back and he flinches repeatedly. One of his crew run over and nudge him with his foot, Ace unresponsive, continues to seize. "Boss ain't lookin' too good." He turns to the guy still stood by Asha who just shrugs.
"Maybe we should call someone?" They both agree and run out of the church. Idiots.
Ray moves his head to look at Asha, who is still curled up unconscious. He tries to speak but it comes out a strained rasp and he coughs, wincing at the pain that erupts from his side. He uses his foot to push himself across the floor and towards her, and I can tell it is hard for him. Meanwhile Ace has stopped seizing and he's still. He would've lived to see seventy if it wasn't for that epileptic fit - the bullet was the least of his worries.
When Ray gets to Asha he grabs her arm and shakes her gently. She still has her eyes shut and is worryingly still. Ray rolls her onto her back and she opens her eyes slightly, tears streaming steadily. She looks at him and whispers "I thought I was dead."
He smiles shakily, his face pale "Yeah me too. Can't get rid of you though can we?" He laughs and grimaces at the knife. Asha sits up slowly her gaze settling on the handle.
"He hurt you." She says bluntly.
"Really? I'd never have guessed." Ray whispers smiling weakly, he grits his teeth "God this hurts."
Asha moves towards him straining at the damage she received. Ray is still lying down breathing heavily shutting his eyes to conceal tears. Asha puts her hands, still bound, near the wound and he tenses and opens his eyes looking at her "Tell me straight Doc, is it bad?"
A tear streams down Asha's face and she nods "Yeah, please don't die." She croaks and breathes deeply "I'm gonna pull on three. Got it?"
Ray nods lips pressed together thinly "If I survive, what do I get?"
"A lifetime with me?"
"Oh dear that sounds horrible." Ray laughs shakily "Whatever happens, I want you to know that I love y-Ouch!"
Asha scrunches her nose holding the knife in the air, Ray glares and she shrugs "You were distracted, so I thought, ya know."
Ray nods "I was getting mushy and you ruined it. Nice one love."
"I love you too?" Asha smiles and rips the sleeve off her t shirt, pressing it against the gouge made by the knife. "Honestly, I get into a bit of bother and end up saving your ass every time."
"Er no fair. I was trying my best."
"I know and that's why I love you. Really."
Ray raises his eyebrow "Really?"
"Really."
"Really?"
"Ray I swear. This knife can go back in just as easily as I took it out."
Ray laughs "Okay! Okay. Calm it. I love you more though."
Asha exhales defeated "Sure whatever."
Ray's face gets serious "I mean it." He reaches up and strokes a hand across her face cupping her chin. "Help me up?" Asha sits him up and he kisses her softly "We need to move on. I don't trust anyone here at all."
"No me neither. I woke up and Ace was above me, a hand over my mouth and dragging me up. You didn't wake. He said they'd drugged you, that help wasn't gonna come for a witch like me. "
Ray nods and holds the cloth to his wound, sliding one knee up in order to stand. He hesitates and undoes the knot around Asha's hands "That's better. No one should treat you that way. I have no pity for Ace. Even if he's dead."
Asha stands shakily and grabs Ray's arm in an attempt to help him up, but they both end up finding support on one another. Then the doors of the church open and Anna walks in, the two men following her. Ray exhales "Shit. Not again."
Anna's expression darkens and she looks at Ace and Shrugs "You kill him and then expect to leave alive? I kept telling him it was a bad idea to bring scum in from the outside."
Asha let's go of Ray and steps forward "You aren't gonna hurt either of us. You're going to let us go and get on with your life."
"And I'm going to listen to that because?" The red head motions towards Ace's men and puts her hands on her hips "Kill him. I can deal with the girl."
Ray grunts with the effort of standing and sighs "That's not fair. I'm dead already. "
Anna smiles "Life isn't fair handsome." She looks at the men "Now kill him, for Ace."
The two men move forward and push past Asha, throwing her closer to Anna who steps forward. Ray moves back, but the wound is making it difficult and he just raises his hand in a pathetic attempt to stop them. The men grab him either side and force him to his knees. Anna grabs Asha and turns her to face him. "Okay witch, watch your boyfriend die. It's only fair considering I did."
One of the men pull out a hand gun and press it to Ray's head, his eyes go wide "Asha, remember what I said about loving you regardless as to what happens?" She nods tears in her eyes "Well right now I need you to look away as soon as he pulls the trigger yeah?"
Anna smirks "I'm making her watch you idiot."
"I know, but I'm sure she is strong enough to fight against you on that one."
Asha shuts her eyes tightly and balls her fists "I won't watch you do such a cowardly act."
Anna seethes "Cowardly?"
"Yeah," Asha turns around to face her and her eyes turn hard "if you weren't a coward, you'd have fought me on equal terms, rather than using two puppets against Ray. Its bad enough he's dead already. You'd be better off leaving him to die with that wound."
Anna frowns "You know you're right. It'd be more fun to watch you die by my hands." She looks at the two men "Leave him he'll bleed out on his own." She looks at Asha "Let's take this outside so he doesn't have to watch you die pathetically."
Asha nods "I like how sure you are about this. Makes you a decent fighter."
"Well then may mother nature itself be merciful to you."
Itself? How rude. I smile heartily, that girl has no idea what she has coming.
I think its about time I make myself visible eh?
The girls walk to the main doors of the church and Ray slumps further to the ground, I turn to him and freeze the bleeding. It will slow down his death, healing a being fully is not up to me. He just mutters the words "Grey Angel" before passing out.
Then I make my way outside. Asha and Anna are stood facing each other fists balled, stances strong. Asha's face is no longer soft and innocent looking, its hard and her eyes scream death. I increase the temperature only slightly, more heat means shorter fight I think. Then I let the wind pick up. I was always a sucker for drama.
Anna makes the first move. A swing for Asha's head.
Let the fight begin.
