As soon as we got to the store Lane turned around and looked at Madi.
"Now when we get in there don't be afraid to get things. I'll pay for whatever it is you want okay kid?" she stated, though her tone was very light.
"right Alice? We don't care do we?" she asked as she glanced to me and I nodded, my heart rippling with pain as I saw the shock to go across the girl's face.
"But......" Madi began, voice coming out nearly a whisper however Lane cut her off with a look.
"Hey no buts, no matter what your parents had said to you. You deserve a lot more than you've gotten kid."
Madi looked up at us then, her eyes full of disbelief and tears.
"I....I can't pay you back." My heart shattered at the words that she spoke, did the kid actually believe that she had to repay anyone who bought her anything?
"Hey, you're not suppose to pay anyone back that gets you something." I found myself saying and Madi looked at me shocked.
"she's right, come on kiddo. Let's go get the shopping done." Lane stated, opening her door and getting out to help the young girl down.
It took us a clear hour and a half to shop, half because Madi was afraid to actually pick anything out despite our pressuring. However after repeatedly failed attempts to get her to pick stuff out we did manage to get her to tell us what she liked or disliked.
On the way home Lane glanced back and smiled at Madi, who was trying to play some hand held videogame that Lane had bought her.
"you like the stuff we got today?" she asked and Madi nodded, eyes trained on the screen.
"how about we stop to get something to eat?" I asked as I heard the girl's stomach grumble softly.
"sure, where do you want to eat Madi?" Lane replied and causing the little blonde to look up and glance between Lane and I.
"don't you want to pick?" she asked softly, unsure of what we were asking.
"Today's your day." I answered, causing her to smile a bit.
"then....can we go to Wendy's?" she asked and Lane nodded.
"sure, anywhere." she answered with a smile.
