Chapter 14: Side Effects

Ethan's POV

I feel really bad that Mia has to go through all of this and it's all my fault. It's not fair to her. But if ending it makes things somewhat better in her family, so be it.

"Mia." I stopped. "Can we talk?"

"Can we talk tomorrow? I'm exhausted from everything that's gone down today." she gave me a sorrow look.

"Yeah of course."

"Where am I sleeping?"

"In my bed."

"Are you sure?"

"Don't question anything. Come on.
I'll sleep in the chair."

She laid down in my bed. "Please don't sleep in the chair."

"I've fallen asleep in this chair countless times. It's okay."

She motioned me to lay with her. "I'm sorry. I didn't know anywhere else to go."

"It's okay. You're in my arms. I know you'll be safe." she moved in closer and fell asleep.

The three of us took the day off. We needed this day off, get our weekend started early.

"So what are we doing today?" Mia asked.

"Let's go zip lining."

Mia stopped in her tracks.

"Is everything alright?" I asked her.

"My head hurts is all."

"Let's go home then."

"I don't wanna ruin the fun."

"No, it's fine." Grayson said.

"I feel bad."

"Mia, it's fine. Don't sweat it." I kissed her forehead and put my arm over her shoulder.

"We'll just go home and watch movies or something."

"Okay." she rubbed my hand. "Do you guys have ice packs or something at your house? I need to ice my head. I'm seeing double."

"Are you okay?" I asked worriedly.

"Yeah. I think got a head concussion after falling on the ground."

"Jesus Christ did you fall that hard?"

"Grayson, the room is made of wood. So most likely. Or I hit my head on something on the way down." she shrugged.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"

"Because I just... I don't know."

"I'll carry you home." Grayson gave her a piggy back ride.

Mia's POV

Could this actually be a side effect from that wolfsbane my family ended up using and not a concussion? What the fuck even is the different wolfsbane? Is it like making drugs? Was it even wolfsbane?

We walked into the house and Grayson sat me down on the couch.

"I'll go get you an ice pack." Ethan said.

"You feelin' better now?" Grayson asked.

"It's still as bad as it was back there."

"When'd all of this start?" Ethan handed me the ice pack.

"After I, basically, got poisoned. So maybe it's not a concussion. Maybe it's a side effect. I don't know."

"How would they have even made a different wolfsbane?"

"Because my family is crazy." I leaned my head on his shoulder. "I'm gonna go outside and get some fresh air. I'll be back in a little. And before you guys ask, I don't need you coming with me. I'll be fine."

I walked outside and sat on their front porch for a little while. A few minutes later, I felt that it was time to go back inside. But before I could, someone pushed me against the door and I hit my head... hard... again. I fell to the ground... again.

Meredith stood over me.

"You should be more careful around me. Poor Mia, so helpless without her sorry excuse of a boyfriend and his brother." she pouted, "you guys better watch out. The alpha, he's dangerous. I know who he is. I don't mind being around him because he tolerates me. But the twins? You best be careful. I'm not here to warn you. I'm here to threaten you. If you keep digging, he will find out and end you. All of you. Tell your boyfriend I was here and I'm going to kill you. Slowly and painfully."

She kissed her hand and lightly slapped me.

I laid on the ground for a little while and ko'ed.

Ethan's POV

"She's been out there a while. I'm gonna check... on her." I said and realized Grayson was napping.

I opened the door and saw Mia lying on the ground.

"Oh shit."

I brought her inside and laid her down on the couch. I ran to the kitchen to grab her another ice pack and iced her head. About 5 minutes later she woke up.

"Are you okay?" I asked her.

"I think so. What happened?" she grunted.

"I don't know. I went out to check on you and found you on the ground."

Her eyes widened.

I looked at her confused, "what's wrong...?"

"Nothing."

"Mia. I know you're lying."

"Are you listening to my heartbeat?"

"Yes."

"It was Meredith. She came. She pushed me against the door and told me she knew who the alpha was and that he was the one that turned her. And that if we kept digging and trying to figure out who it is, we're just gonna get ourselves killed. And if I told you, she's gonna kill me."

"I'm not gonna let that happen."

"Didn't you have something you wanted to talk about?"

"Uh... yeah..." I looked down.

"What is it?"

"I just want things in your family to be better again."

"It'll get better eventually."

"If it means I have to break up with y–"

"Why would you consider that?"

"Because they hate me and want me to leave your life."

"But that doesn't mean we'd have to breakup. Plus I'd put up a fight with you." she rubbed my face with her thumb, "I'm not gonna let them break us up like that."

I kissed her hand and smiled.
