Mia's POV

"She was the first–" my aunt began.

"Werewolf hunter. I know."

"She's your great ancestor."

"If she took Henri's last name, why do we have different last names?"

"I changed it." my dad said.

"She's the one that came up with the code? The one you still follow to this day?"

"Yes."

I groaned.

"I have homework to do now."

"Why did you look it up?" my mom asked.

"I needed answers. I wanted to know how it all came to be."

"You could've asked." my aunt said.

"I had a feeling you wouldn't have given me legitimate answers."

"I would've given you honest ones."

"It's a little hard to believe knowing that I've been lied to all my life. I'll be in my room."

"You're gonna have to live up to this code anyway."

"No actually. I've come up with my own and I'm gonna live up to that one. 'Nous protégeons ceux qui ne peuvent pas se protéger eux-mêmes'."

"Why?"

"I'm not a hunter like you guys. Nor do I want to be. I want to protect people, not scare them."

"You're gonna want to when the time comes. By ridding all these werewolves, we are protecting people, Mia."

"Can you please just accept the fact that I'm dating Ethan? These arguments are so repetitive. Just move past it." I shrugged.

"Invite him over for dinner."

"The last time he was here, you almost killed him."

My mom walked over to me.

"I promise, we won't try to kill him. Or at least I won't."

"Friends don't lie."

"Who are you? Eleven?"

"I'll be in my room."

Ethan's POV

"They want me to invite you over for dinner. If you don't wanna come I can tell them you're busy or something." Mia called me.

"Tonight?"

"I guess."

"I'll come over right now."

"You really don't have to."

"I want to."

"I'll let them know you're coming."

"Love you."

I sensed her smile on the other end.

"Love you, too." she said and hung up.

A few minutes later, we heard a scream. Mia called me again.

"Did you hear that?" she asked.

"What was it?"

"I don't know, but it was nearby."

"Did you hear that?" Grayson walked into my room.

"Yeah." I put Mia on speaker phone.

"Whatever that was, we need to get there before my family does. I'm gonna pick you two up." she hung up the phone.

After a few minutes, Mia pulled in.
