the sun.

"phil, let him go."

phil shakes his head abruptly, knuckles white around elons throat. "he murdered dan."

"phil, if you don't release him immediately, i will have to call other officers and they won't hesitate before subduing you. did you hear that?" the officer says quietly.

phil glances over his shoulder at the corrections guard before him. phil thinks his name is lucas or something. he's always been one of the most lenient officers; he organized extra time in the yard, bigger servings of mashed potatoes, batteries for the tv remote. he had an emollient but firm demeanor and was definitely closer to the inmates than the other officers.

"i can't," phil whimpers as elon gags on his own saliva, face grey and eyes empty.

"yes you can," lucas says softly, moving closer to phil slowly. "just let go. you're alright. everything is alright."

"he has to die," phil swallows, choking on the words. "he has to suffer the way dan did." he eyes are full of tears now, threatening to spill over his eyelashes.

"killing him will not accomplish anything. it will not bring dan back. it will not make you feel better. it will, however, keep you here forever. is that what you want? to be stuck behind these walls until you go insane? you kill him and your ten years suddenly turn into a life sentence. let him go, phil."

elon drops to his knees, gasping and panting. his chest heaves as he nurses his crushed windpipe. he stares up at phil, eyes glossy and lips wet.

the officer places a firm hand on phils shoulder. "you're okay, phil. everything's going to be okay."
