the sun.

"mr. lester, do you understand what you're being trialled for?"

phil is un showered and he feels filthy. after being arrested at the scene, he was thrown in a holding cell for nearly a week with the bare minimum of the clothes on his back and the stench of alcohol on his breath.

he licks his lips, tugging at the shackles bound to his wrists. the court room awaits his response.

"public disturbance?" he chuckles, shrugging his shoulders from beneath his heavy orange jumpsuit.

"murder, mr. lester," the judge announces impatiently. "when you fired that gun, you shot a man directly in his side. he bled to death on the street. what do you have to say that?"

phil thinks about the way dan acted during his trial- scared and nervous. he was timid and innocent looking. phil refuses to be as pathetic and weak as dan was and laughs.

"wrong place, wrong time, hey?"

phil hears his lawyer sigh angrily and phil looks down at the clean shaven man sitting at the small wooden table. he promised to get phil off his charges, but phil was doing nothing to help his own case.

"you're gone, kid," he mutters to phil and phil shrugs, his shackles clanging.

"mr. lester, what do you plead?"

he looks back down at his lawyer who mouths 'not guilty.'

phil glances around the court room, taking in the group behind him. two sides; one for him and one against him. granted, there's not many for him, but there are definitely some rooting for him, some hopeful. annette is there; she tried to keep an eye on him after dan's sentence, but he was rude and ungrateful and she gave up. but there she was- rooting for him, hopeful for him. phil has the overwhelming urge to scream how much he's sorry.

phil walked into this telling himself that he would be strong; stronger than dan. but he understood how hard it must have been for him to stand up here, to know there was no hope in hell of getting off. he swallows thickly.

"guilty."
